The plane plunged to the ground after the pilot reported both engines had failed, officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eSeats, pillows, and smouldering wreckage were strewn across a pasture dotted with trees among cattle ranches near the border with Colombia, where the plane went down on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eAn official from the Colombian Council in Venezuela said that the majority of passports retrieved from the plane wreckage were of French citizenship from the French Caribbean island of Martinique. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials said the plane was carrying 152 tourists from Martinique, including a 21-month-old infant, returning home after a week in Panama. \u003cbr/\u003eRescue workers picked through the wreckage, recovering body parts and pieces of bone amid bloodstained clothes that lay near charred trees.\u003cbr/\u003eThe search and rescue chief at the site said rescuers recovered one of the jet's black boxes, which could give clues to the cause, but the cockpit voice recorder had yet to be found.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crash was the deadliest in Venezuelan history, according to the Aviation Safety Network, a non-profit group that keeps a database of air disasters. It said the death toll surpassed a 1969 crash in Venezuela that killed 155, including 71 victims on the ground.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tail of the West Caribbean Airways plane jutted from the ground, the one part of the jet that appeared intact. \u003cbr/\u003eAs the plane developed problems just after 3am (0700 GMT), the Colombian pilot radioed to a nearby airport in Maracaibo requesting permission for an emergency landing, saying both engines had failed. But officials said the plane fell into a steep descent and broke apart on impact, just 10 minutes later.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents reported hearing an explosion near Machiques, 400 miles (650 kilometres) west of Caracas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cause of the crash remained unclear. Panama's civil aviation authority said the plane had enough fuel for the three-hour trip.\u003cbr/\u003eWest Caribbean Airways has a record of other mechanical problems and financial troubles, but airline officials insisted they did not cut corners on safety.\u003cbr/\u003eAirline officials said the same plane that crashed had its tail cone fall off during a flight in Colombia last month, but it was later repaired.\u003cbr/\u003eAn airline spokesman said the plane passed all safety inspections Monday night in Colombia before heading to Panama to begin Tuesday's flight.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crash came two days after a Cypriot airliner plunged into the mountains north of Athens, Greece, killing all 121 people aboard.
