Wide of eagle
Eagles may seem the most unlikely creatures to be kept as pets, but in Indonesia there are plenty of examples.
But many of the birds suffer abuse from owners who do not care for them properly.
Some of the lucky ones end up here, at the Raptor Sanctuary in Bogor.
The eagle conservation centre is the only one of its kind in Indonesia.
It was founded in 2007 by a group of government agencies, non-governmental organisations and an international oil and gas corporation.
The sanctuary receives its eagles from various temporary rescue shelters for animals in the area.
Since its formal opening in 2008, the sanctuary has provided care for 17 eagles to date.
It has also successfully released 3 eagles back to the wild after undergoing its rehabilitation programme.
Currently the eagle centre has 6 eagles under its care, including two Crescent Serpent-Eagles, Hawk-Eagles and a near-extinct Javan hawk eagle.
These eagles had either been confiscated from live bird markets or handed over voluntarily by local residents.
According to Gunawan, the Director of Raptor Sanctuary, abuse of the animals is relatively common in Indonesia.
"The level of exploitation of eagles is quite high," he says. "They are usually taken from their nest when they are still very young. Even though some eagles are snatched away by trap or bait, but most are taken from their nest."
The director goes by only one name Gunawan. This is quite common for many Indonesians.
The birds are then kept as pets.
The eagles housed in the display cages are considered too vulnerable to be reintroduced to the wild.
They often have permanent scars which fundamentally decrease their ability to survive on their own.
From time to time, Gunawan and the keepers at the centre carry out health tests on the eagles to monitor their medical state, or treat injuries.
The hawk eagle will have to remain in the display cage for the rest of its life, because of an injury to its wing sustained when it was someone's pet.
If released into the wild, the eagle is not going to be strong enough to fly properly.
Gunawan argued that various eagles at the centre continue to suffer physical and mental scars as a result of their past lives.
"The way the owners treat their pet eagles affects their condition. We differentiate between physical and mental injuries to the eagles. When eagles suffer mental wounds, they are acting similar to people who have mental wounds and exhibit abnormal behaviour," he says.
Some eagles suffer physical trauma which affect their movement.
Their claws cannot grip on firm footing anymore or their wings have been cut.
Other eagles endure mental scars which affect their behaviour.
In the wild, eagles instinctively avoid humans.
But some eagles at the centre have become accustomed to being around people since their domestication.
The sanctuary is involved in a very important programme of eagle conservation, which is the release of healthy eagles into the wild.
The eagles need as little interaction with humans as possible during the rehabilitation process.
"In the rehabilitation phase, we try to restore the natural instincts of an eagle. If people working in the circus are used to taming animals, we are trying to turn them wild again in here," Gunawan says.
Before releasing an eagle, the staff keep it inside a 200 square-metre rehabilitation cage for observation until it is ready to be returned to the wild.
The keepers maintain a good distance from the cage to avoid the eagle becoming too familiar with humans.
This rehabilitation cage is made to look like a primary forest - the natural habitat for eagles.
It has big tree branches, thick vegetation as well as a water spring.
In order to motivate the eagles to hunt as they would in the wild, the keepers also bring in live prey such as small birds and guinea pigs.
This Javan hawk eagle is due to be released later in the year if its condition continues to improve.
The release would be a triumph for eagle conservation in the country.
According to figures from the sanctuary, there are only about 500 Javan hawk eagles living in the wild on the island of Java.
But even when the eagles are ready to be released, they still face a threat of diminishing natural habitat and illegal poachers.
Gunawan believes that the loss of habitat contributes to the exploitation of the eagles.
"The main threat to eagles is clearly the loss of their habitat. When they lose their habitat, they become hunted down for pleasure and hobbies," he says.
The raptor sanctuary is located within a vast national park, home to what many say is the biggest eagle population in the region.
But the eagles are not completely safe here. Some sections of the forests are under threat from land conversion, and eagle hunters are known to operate in the area.
People working at the centre believed that the survival of the eagles ultimately depends on the perception of people living in the area.
The sanctuary is currently engaged in a series of public campaigns and awareness programmes in schools around Bogor.
Park ranger Ahmad Suryadarma argues that the public awareness campaign is especially important around this national park.
"This place is quite close to the capital city, and the capital is known to be the centre of animal trade. We hope that we can raise the awareness of people living around the capital, in Bogor and the greater capital area, of the importance of raptors," he says.
The park and its eagle centre is only 48 kilometres (around 30 miles) away from the capital Jakarta, the centre of wildlife trade in the country.
Conservationists hope that more raptor sanctuaries like this can be
