Members of the Drumcree Lodge were also part of the parade which is expected to go to Drumcree church later this...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eNatural Sound \u003cbr/\u003eNearly 10 thousand Orangemen took to the streets of Portadown on Monday for their annual commemoration parade. \u003cbr/\u003eMembers of the Drumcree Lodge were also part of the parade which is expected to go to Drumcree church later this afternoon. \u003cbr/\u003eSecurity forces staged a massive operation in advance of the march, but, so far, the parades have been peaceful. \u003cbr/\u003eJuly 12 is the most important day in the Orange Order's calendar. \u003cbr/\u003eThe day is used to commemorate the victory of the army of King William III - set on restoring Protestantism to the British Isles - over the forces of the Roman Catholic James II.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Orange order takes its name from the House of Orange, the dynasty headed by William III.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year a British government-appointed Parades Commission banned Orangemen from passing through the two most hostile Catholic areas: the Garvaghy Road here in Portadown, and the Lower Ormeau neighbourhood in south Belfast.\u003cbr/\u003eOrangemen have so far obeyed the commission's judgment in Portadown, where police and soldiers blocked one march on July 4.\u003cbr/\u003eMonday's march also passed off peacefully with onlookers cheering on the marchers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Orangemen would like to march down the Garvaghy Road to Drumcree church but refuse to reroute their march. \u003cbr/\u003eThe church has been the site of a year long standoff between Orangemen and security forces after the parade to a nationalist area was banned for the second time. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far this year's march-related tensions have produced far less violence than in the previous three years. \u003cbr/\u003eLast year, for example, 10 Catholic churches were burned - some to the ground - in the days preceding the disputed Portadown march.\u003cbr/\u003eThe marching season this time coincides with last-ditch efforts to form a Protestant-Catholic government - the long-delayed heart of last year's Good Friday accord for the province. \u003cbr/\u003eThe peace effort could benefit if Northern Ireland can avert the mayhem sparked by marches in recent years.\u003cbr/\u003e Drumcree, Portadown, Northern Ireland - July 12, 1999\u003cbr/\u003e1.
