Black and white image of Victoria Crater taken by the Opportunity rover\u003cbr/\u003eAfter months of exploring the martian surface, one of NASA's robot rovers has arrived at the rim of a crater five times wider than a previous stadium sized one it studied for half a year, NASA has said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Opportunity rover is at the edge of the massive Victoria Crater looking over at the far wall of the depression approximately 800 metres (half a mile) away. \u003cbr/\u003eNASA scientists hope that the crater's high walls with layers of exposed rock could unlock new secrets about the red planet's geological past.  \u003cbr/\u003eNASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California released several images from rover taken on Tuesday and Wednesday (26 and 27 September) as it neared the crater.  \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials at the space agency say the Opportunity's journey to Victoria Crater was no easy task. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has driven more than 9.2 kilometres (5.7 miles) from Endurance Crater to Victoria across a flat plain dotted with smaller craters and strewn with sand ripples. \u003cbr/\u003eFrequent stops to examine rocks broke up the journey and one large sand ripple kept the rover trapped for more than five weeks. \u003cbr/\u003eThat journey alone is epic, says NASA. Even more amazing, they say is the long life of the twin rovers Opportunity and Spirit. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have been exploring Mars since January 2004, more than 10 times longer than the original prime mission of 3 months. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 900 days later, they're still going strong, giving NASA a chance for to further explore the planet.\u003cbr/\u003eOpportunity has already been inside one crater, and NASA's rover team are preparing a possible trip for the little rover into the 200-foot-deep (60 metre) Victoria crater. \u003cbr/\u003eNASA admit they're a little surprised the rovers are still going, but concede the rovers are showing signs of old age.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I mean it's like going from the Sahara desert to Antarctica without a change of clothing every single day. That kind of thermal stress has made parts break, and we're actually surprised more hasn't broken. vehicles have broken, some systems have failed and although NASA is keeping a careful watch on the fragile rovers, scientists are confident that they'll continue to shed new light on the planet's scouting around the edge of Victoria Crater, looking for the perfect spot to snap a big colour picture and continue to make space history.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe space agency says that operations for both rovers will be minimised for much of October as Mars passes nearly behind the sun from Earth's perspective making radio communication more difficult than
