Various of people eating curry sausages
Busy urban lives often lead to eating on the run, fast food, empty calories and disenfranchised producers.
But the 'slow food' movement is trying to change that.
A scheme in Bavaria, Germany is finding urban investors to help fund farmers so they can produce top quality foods and forge links between city people and the countryside.
With excellent produce grown in their backyards, people in Bavaria have a head start when it comes to food and cooking.
Werner Haase and his wife Martina run a dairy farm about an hour outside Munich.
Nearly a decade ago the Haases decided to transform their conventional production farm into an organic farm and focus on the quality not quantity of their output.
Their products are hand made from start to finish.
They have about 60 goats at the farm and also some 25 rare Murnau Werdenfelser cattle, an old Bavarian breed of which only an estimated
125 still exist.
The Murnau Werdenfelser cattle are not suitable for mass farming and so were neglected by most farms, which caused their numbers to decline.
Werner Haase feeds his cattle only on grass and hay grown on the property and no additives, hormones or preservatives are given to the animals.
By adopting this method of animal husbandry, Haase says he wants to provide a high quality and tasty product as well as more transparency for his customers.
"There is always a certain amount of anonymity when you buy a product somewhere. But if people come here and visit our farm and understand what we do and why we do it, then I think theyll enjoy our products more when they eat them and enjoy a comforting feeling. And this is what it is all about, that we all feel comfortable."
Following the decline of milk prices in Europe over the past few years, Hasse stopped delivering the milk produced by his Murnau Werdenfelser cows to be mixed with the milk of other farms in collective distribution tanks.
Haase wants to trade his milk and cheese himself.
But to do that, he needed to invest in a cheese dairy.
So Werner Haase has come up with an unusual way to raise the 70,000 Euros ($96,000 US Dollars) he needs to build his cheese dairy.
Elsewhere in Germany many city residents are increasingly concerned about what they eat and where their food comes from.
So Hasse in co-operation with the organisation "Slow Food Munich" has launched a pilot project called "City people become farmers".
Now people who care about the source of their natural products can invest in the Haase's farm.
Their investments starting from about 500 Euros($686) will have an annual interest rate of 5 percent.
The investment runs a minimum of five years, but the profit for the city folks isn't a cash dividend.
His investors get paid in food, a healthy dividend of natural products.
After leaving their money in the Haase's farm for five years, investors can redeem their "stock" and receive the principal investment in addition to their edible dividends. They can also re-invest the money and keep buying the farm's products.
"I could go to a bank and ask for a loan, but that wouldn't allow me to bind my customers to my products, which is what I want to do. I want the consumer to be compensated with a natural product instead of an interest payment. The cows have to decide which grass they eat and which they leave for others, and the consumer faces the same situation. The consumer is in the same situation. With his investment, he chooses my products. And he gets something good for it, that's for sure." Werner explains.
Martina Haase runs the cheese dairy at the farm. She makes cheese out of about 20,000 litres of goat milk a year. The cheese must be kept in a dark cold box at least six weeks then it is sold in the farm shop.
Martina says that the secret ingredient is love.
"We put a lot of love into our products. A consumer once said about our cheese, that you taste these 100 grams of love. There is a lot of personal investment in our cheese. Where others use machines for their production our products are handmade and those hundred grams of love, you can't buy that."
The customers of Haase's shop are neighbours who live in the village, but many are tourists who spend their vacation in this scenic region.
Cheeses, sausages and meat can be bought at the shop.
Such shops are growing in number around rural Germany.
Petra Waehning a member of the"Slow Food" movement in Munich spent some time at Haase's farm working with the farmer and his wife.
Waehning was inspired to create the pilot project "City people become farmers", which brings consumers and farmers closer together and provides transparency in the production of foods that we eat every day.
Slow Food is an organisation founded in 1989 that now has over 100,000 members world wide. It believes in healthy, ethically produced food and was started in response to the rising consumption of fast or junk food.
"First we have to take the farmers out of their anonymity, we have to give them a face. And then we thought of how we can help them with investments and how we find consumers who buy their products. We developed the idea for the project "City people become farmers" and hope that this project brings consumers and farmers closer together and provide more transparency about the products people eat." says Waehning.
At the second informal meeting to attract investors to Haase's farm in Fischbachau, some twenty people have come to get more detailed information about the production at the farm but also about the investment options.
So far they have collected 30,000 Euros ($41, 265 US Dollars), nearly half the amount needed for their cheese dairy.
Munich resident Juergen Schmidt is one of the investors in the pilot project. He has invested 500 Euros ($688) and says he is very pleased with the investment.
"The products I'm eating have to taste good and their quality has to be good as well. I'm not able to control every step of the production but I trust Werner Haase's products. I want to support him and his ideas so that my children and grandchildren can still buy his products 20 years from now." he says.
Since March 2010 products from the Haase's farm are delivered from Fischbachau to Munich.
Every two weeks, the investors can pick up their food dividend or just buy products at a central location in Munich.
As the idea catches on, more farmers are getting involved with the project.
Petra Weahning wants to expand the project's offering to include farms that produce organic poultry and eggs. She wants "City people become farmers" to connect as many farms with their customers as possible.
One thing is sure: the return for your money never tasted so good and it is a far cry from the ubiquitous sausage stands and fast food joints on offer in the city.

<div class='action-container flex
