Various of children during religion class\u003cbr/\u003eAs Tunisians await the results of the country's first free elections, the hometown of the martyr whose suicide sparked off the Arab Spring is dying a slow death.\u003cbr/\u003eUnemployment in Sidi Bouzid in central Tunisia is double the rest of the country - so was Mohammed Bouazizi's death an empty sacrifice?.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was here that corruption and frustration drove a young Tunisian vegetable seller to despair.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Mohammed Bouazizi burned himself to death in front of the town hall, few could have predicted the popular uprising that would follow.\u003cbr/\u003eHis suicide sparked off the wave of popular revolts that have come to be known as the Arab Spring - they also put the sleepy town of Sidi Bouzid on the map.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, Mohammed Bouazizi is a national hero, and a martyr in the fight for democratic freedom throughout the Arab world.\u003cbr/\u003eBut nothing much has changed here since that fateful day on December 17th last year (2010) says Saber Houve, who worked alongside Bouazizi:\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are no real changes. We are earning only enough money to eat. We only work to buy our daily bread. We can't do anything. Sometimes we spend days without eating anything. Just look at my situation.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAs in most Tunisian towns, economic activity revolves around the open air market in front of the town hall.\u003cbr/\u003eBut locals are angry that their situation has worsened, despite the sacrifices made.\u003cbr/\u003eCorruption is still a problem says unemployed street seller Aumen Afi:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The situation hasn't changed. It has even got worse. The only people working are the ones who have relatives working for the government. They just recruit their own relatives.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTown officials recognise the frustrations but across the country it's a waiting game. \u003cbr/\u003eThe popular uprising that forced Tunisian President Ben Ali from office in January 2011 promised much but delivered little claims  Tarek Lajnef:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that after January 14th the Tunisians have run out of patience. They have heard too many promises that never became reality. The transitional government has stated and implemented many urgent measures ever since the new era began, aimed at improving and stabilising the country and to start development of the area.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEverything happens at a slow pace in Sidi Bouzid, capital of the region of the same name in central Tunisia.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Mohammed Bouazizi changed everything.\u003cbr/\u003eThe young fruit vendor was thrown out of the market by a female municipal inspector because he didn't have a proper licence.\u003cbr/\u003eNormally a bribe would have been enough, typically 10 dinars (about USD 7 dollars) for the fruit and vegetable sellers - or pay a fine of 20 dinars (around USD 14 dollars), equivalent to several day's wages. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter refusing to pay the usual bribe, an angry Bouazizi wrestled with the inspector and was beaten by two of her colleagues, who also confiscated his electronic scales.\u003cbr/\u003eHe went to the municipal building, demanded his property, and was beaten again. Then he went to the governor's office, demanded an audience and was refused. Sometime around noon, Mohammed Bouazizi drenched himself in paint thinners and set himself on fire. \u003cbr/\u003eThe protests that followed transformed the politics of the Arab world. But the plight of the vendors in this market remains much the same.\u003cbr/\u003eZied Bouazizi recently finished an MBA in international relations at the University of Tunisia in Tunis.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a cousin of Mohammed, Zied is very proud of being a relative of the man who's become an international hero:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel so proud. The revolution started here in Sidi Bouzid. And my relative was the person who, by setting himself on fire, started the revolution that have spread all over the Arab world. I feel so proud and that is a great thing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere are around three dozens stalls selling half-rotten fruit and vegetables, toys and fake brand clothing and merchandising. Many are illegal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe average monthly earnings of a vendor are around 120 Tunisian Dinars (USD 85 dollars) according to some of the vendors.\u003cbr/\u003eAcross Tunisia, there is frustration at the slow pace of change in the country, especially as the economy grinds to a halt amid post-revolutionary turmoil and soaring prices, in part due to the crisis in neighbouring Libya - where dictator Moammar Gadhafi was captured and killed on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eGrowth in GDP has gone from 3.7 percent in 2010 to zero, if not negative for this year, according to the government, and youth unemployment is at 23 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Sidi Bouzid, local union leaders claim unemployment stands at more than 30 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a local college here for higher studies in agriculture and arts.\u003cbr/\u003eBut graduate unemployment hovers around 25 per cent. It's much worse for women at 44 per cent against a national average of 19 per cent.\u003cbr/\u003eFor college students like Marwa Hamdi, the future is uncertain:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We keep hearing promises but we don't know. Nowadays there are so many people unemployed and we don't know whether this will get better or worse. We have no guarantees for the future. We are waiting for something new to happen. We are waiting to see what happens after the elections.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSidi Bouzid, like the rest of Tunisia, fervently hopes for a better future. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the hope inspired by the Arab
