So what we know is that if we take these lesions when they're very active and we give them the radiation at that point in time we can preferentially knock out the cells that are causing all the trouble. We also know that if you treat lesions that are very large, they can be outside the zone of radiation that we deliver in the back of the eye, so if we can get lesions that are fully within the treatment zone, lesions that are less than 4 millimeters (0.1 inch), it doesn't sound very big, but in terms of the eye it is. Close of patient \u003cbr/\u003eThe outlook for patients with the blinding disease, wet AMD , can be dramatically improved by a robot which delivers radiation therapy into the eye according to British doctors.\u003cbr/\u003eThe robot has been given approval for use in Europe following years of trials across scores of European countries.\u003cbr/\u003eJonathan Gathorne Hardy is now eighty years old, but he still remembers an aunt from when he was a young boy.\u003cbr/\u003eShe had wet AMD (age related macular degeneration) and he watched her stumble around her home as her eyes became more diseased and progressively, she became completely blind.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the same age she was, Gathorne Hardy could have faced the same fate.\u003cbr/\u003eHe too has wet AMD and feared losing sight in one eye completely.\u003cbr/\u003eEach month he was treated with an injection into the eye, an event he came to dread.\u003cbr/\u003eGathorne Hardy was fortunate to become part of a pan European trial of a new radiation therapy for wet AMD led by scientists and eye surgeons at Kings College London.\u003cbr/\u003eThat was two years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the robot is being used in the UK by Optegra, a private chain of clinics specialising in eye treatments.\u003cbr/\u003eGathorne Hardy's undergoing imaging tests to see if his other eye can be treated the same way, but although he intermittently has wet AMD the images show he currently has dry AMD which doesn't respond as well. \u003cbr/\u003eThe AMD is seen at the centre of this X ray of Gathorne Hardy's eye.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are dark spots and lighter areas.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is scarring which can also be seen as red spots in the cross section of his eye, but there is no fluid.\u003cbr/\u003eGathorne Hardy's more confident now that one eye is improving.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"Well obviously I became anxious that this eye would start going that way and sight is vital to everyone, no-one needs sight more than anyone else, but it just so happens I earn my living by writing and reading. alone there are 40,000 people with wet AMD, according to Jackson the figures are typical of most other nations of similar size around the globe.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a disease which is becoming increasingly prevalent as our populations survive longer and become more older.\u003cbr/\u003eDeveloping an effective treatment is vital if we are all to enjoy our old age.\u003cbr/\u003eMacular degeneration is hugely important disease.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Jackson it causes more blindness than all the other eye diseases put together.\u003cbr/\u003eThis also means that although the trial showed the therapy was most effective in a quarter of the patients, the sheer numbers of people with the disease means it can still has the potential to improve millions of lives around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery patient responds differently, so some might experience far more improvement.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the Oraya treatment the average patient was able to read another line on the opticians eye test chart.\u003cbr/\u003eFor surgeons like Jackson it is an exciting time.\u003cbr/\u003eLots of different types of research are going, but most patient still face going to hospital every month for injections into the eyball which doctors say they find extremely unpleasant. \u003cbr/\u003eGathorne Hardy believes he is experiencing an improvement.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"Neither I nor or the consultant knew that, however, immediately I began to suspect it was real because I ceased to have Lucentis (macular disease drug) injections in this eye and in fact I haven't had a Lucentis injection for two years in this eye, whereas in this eye I have them every two or three months and as well as that my sight is slightly improved.\"\u003cbr/\u003eGathorne Hardy is looking forward to life.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is a writer and his sight is dear to him .\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"There may be other things wrong with me which make my old age not as healthy, but yes as far as eyes go (I am) healthy.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere is no cure for wet AMD, but the Oraya is a step forward which allows doctors to reduce the number of patients who need injections.\u003cbr/\u003eAs they give more and more patients therapy they hope to become more adept at targeting patients who benefit most and are most appropriate for treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eSurgeons are still learning. \u003cbr/\u003eThe problem is that the disease changes constantly and patients who present with a quiet inactive disease one month, could show up with aggressively leaking scars the next.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors now believe getting the treatment to them at exactly the right time will crucially affect results.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for many like Gathorne Hardy, it could mean a more
