Coral snake comes out and leaves.\u003cbr/\u003eNear Brazil's largest city a private organisation is devoted to the preservation of wildlife and the rescue of troubled animals. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Jundiaï¿½, Sï¿½o Paulo treats about 100 animals every month. \u003cbr/\u003eAround half of them are released back into the wild.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Japi Mountains Biological Reserve is part of the green belt that supplies water to South America's largest city: Sï¿½o Paulo. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's crossed by one of Brazil's busiest highways, Via Anhanguera. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is one of the largest remaining parts of the Atlantic Forest  - a biodiversity hotspot of which only seven percent remains.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rehabilitation centre was founded in 1988 in Jundiaï¿½, near the reserve. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery day at least three animals are brought here by police, fire-fighters or members of the public. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout half of the injured are birds. Many need urgent treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe number of parakeets wounded by kites using nylon lines is increasing.  Many need to have feet amputated. \u003cbr/\u003eThe vast majority of these birds are domesticated and cannot be reintroduced to the wild. They find sanctuary here or at other institutions.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the animals are babies whose mothers have been killed. \u003cbr/\u003eOrphaned parakeets need to be hand fed. \u003cbr/\u003eHidden in the marsupial pouch are young opossums who spend their first three months here before being released.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir mothers were killed by domestic dogs. \u003cbr/\u003eThis boa constrictor from the Amazon will have to stay in captivity. Releasing it here would disturb the local equilibrium. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 200 animals will have to stay here for the rest of their lives. And the numbers increase every month. \u003cbr/\u003eAnimals such as tame foxes and wolves couldn't make it in the wild. \u003cbr/\u003eIsis, a 6 year old maned wolf was born here. Her parents were treated at the centre after being run over by cars. \u003cbr/\u003eVeterinarian Karen Bueno uses a trick to deliver Isis an anti parasite drug. Fruit are part of their natural diet. An irresistible banana hides the medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eWhenever possible, animals are released back to the wild as soon as possible. But this Howler monkey has had to wait until the location of his family was found. \u003cbr/\u003eHowlers live in large groups. Today he can finally go home. \u003cbr/\u003eJorge Campos, an agronomist and his wife, Cristina Harumi Adania, a veterinarian, founded the Centre. While Jorge takes care of the reforestation side of the reserve, a team of five veterinarians work permanently taking care of the animals.  \"Down from the puma, practically all animals of Sï¿½o Paulo state are found in this region,\" says Campos. \"Due to development, many of these animals are preyed upon or run over or victimised by fires or even victims of wildlife trafficking.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThis armadillo was raised as a pet by a local family. Due to lack of a proper diet it lost the movement of its hind legs. \u003cbr/\u003eLuana, the Centre's cook, massages it for 30 minutes every day. Thanks to her efforts the animal is quickly improving. \u003cbr/\u003eA porcupine needs to be diagnosed and is handled with a towel. Its thorns are extremely painful to the touch. Gaseous anaesthesia is used to calm it down. It was found to be totally blind, due to an unknown cause. It too will become a permanent guest at the centre.\u003cbr/\u003eA coati spent a month here in treatment. After many X-rays and antibiotics it can now move its legs again. With the aid of the environmental police a remote spot is chosen and the animal is released into the wild.\u003cbr/\u003eThe flux of incoming animals is constant.  More parrots arrive, and a coral snake. \u003cbr/\u003eAccidentally the deadly snake escapes the box. A skilled veterinarian manages to hold its head and puts it back in the box. It too is considered healthy enough to go back to nature, and within a few hours of its arrival is released.\u003cbr/\u003eKeyword wacky
