But it is most renowned for being an administrative capital, which does not always give it a good image. And so we have tried to develop various initiatives in the city to allow for Brussels to be known differently. To show that one can live well here, that the inhabitants are friendly, and that there are plenty of things to see. And in addition to all that, this project is part of a redevelopment scheme of this industrial zone, which we wanted to transform into a pastime area during the summer. At the same time we want to redevelop the waterways, because Brussels' rivers were covered more than a century ago, the only one that remains is this canal, which is mainly an industrial canal. Therefore to show to the inhabitants of Brussels and visitors that there still exists a waterway along which one can have a pleasant stay. \"\u003cbr/\u003e12. and warm temperatures are forecast. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it may not last long, so the organisers of  Bruxelles les Bains, the city's annual man-made beach are hoping to attract city folk to their canal side shore line when it opens on Friday. \u003cbr/\u003eCreating a man made beach is a daunting task. \u003cbr/\u003eThree thousand tons of sands arrived by barge from the North Sea coast. \u003cbr/\u003eSpecially constructed beach huts and one hundred palm trees have helped transform the kilometre (0.62 mile) long stretch into a beach. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is the fifth year of 'Bruxelles les Bains', Brussels' man-made beach and preparations are going to plan. \u003cbr/\u003eFollowing in the footsteps of Paris, Brussels initiated the idea of an urban beach back in 2002 to allow residents who could not afford to travel a holiday resort experience close to home. \u003cbr/\u003eBrussels' tourism city councillor Philippe Close says the project has helped to revive the run down area along the banks of Brussels' canal. \u003cbr/\u003e 'Bruxelles les Bains' will host numerous activities, from concerts, to beach volleyball, and even yoga. \u003cbr/\u003eClose says it has created employment for 300 people and not including the traders who will benefit from people visiting the area. \u003cbr/\u003eJudging by its success in previous years Close expects \"between 400,000 and 500,000 visitors depending on the weather.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo the far the summer has been disappointing in Northern Europe and it is not forecast to improve much in the coming weeks.
