Bush took office in 2001. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's according to a new survey of two dozen nations conducted this spring by the non-partisan Pew Research Centre. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pew report found that in 21 of the countries surveyed, an average of 71 per cent of respondents had at least some confidence in the US president's handling of world affairs. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2008, when Bush was in the White House, the figure in those same countries was only 17.\u003cbr/\u003eThe centre said the most profound shifts came in Western Europe, notably in France and Germany, where confidence in Obama exceeds that for French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Germany the survey found 64 per cent of those polled this year had a favourable view of the US compared to 30 per cent last year (2008). \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Andrew Kohut, President of the Pew Research Centre, much of the change in positive opinion is driven by personal confidence in Barack Obama.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think he has a lot of great ideas which are better than Bush's ideas. I think he is more democratic,\" German student Nadine Koehne told AP Television News.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the same time, there are specific administration policies that drew near universal acclaim, including Obama's pledge to close the Navy-run detention facility for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the US timeline for withdrawing US troops from Iraq, the survey found.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the poll, which surveyed nearly 27,000 people, also registered continuing levels of profound distrust about US influence and motives among Muslims, particularly in Turkey, Pakistan and the Palestinian territories. \u003cbr/\u003eAttitudes toward America rose slightly in US allies Egypt and Jordan and registered some improvement after Obama's much-heralded speech to the Muslim world delivered in Cairo on June 4. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Palestinians appeared unmoved and Israelis were unimpressed, according to the findings.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Baghdad, local resident Fadhil Tahir expressed his doubts over the US leadership.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, Obama has been reaching out to the Arab world and Israel has lashed back, making it the only country surveyed to feel less favourably towards the US this year than in the past.\u003cbr/\u003eIndonesia, where Obama spent part of his childhood, was a major bright spot in the Muslim world. More than 70 per cent of Indonesians expressed confidence in Obama, up from 23 per cent for Bush in 2008. \u003cbr/\u003eNearly 80 per cent of Indonesians were aware that Obama had lived in their country when he was a boy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe poll also found that while the US' image abroad has largely improved, foreign populations are still concerned about what they see as unilateralism on the part of the United States and the economic and cultural influence that America exerts across the world. \u003cbr/\u003eHuge majorities see global warming as a serious
