Wide shot of lawyers\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft officials presented opening arguments in Washington on Tuesday to challenge a government claim that it unfairly controls the multi-billion dollar market for computer software.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government's antitrust case says Microsoft is using its market dominance to force other firms to use its software, crowding out other industry players like Netscape.\u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft says they will prove their products are better, showing that is the only reason Netscape and other competitors cannot compete.    \u003cbr/\u003eIt was Microsoft's turn on Tuesday to fire back at the U-S government. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials of the software giant appeared in federal court in Washington to counter charges that Microsoft has an unfair  monopoly within its industry.\u003cbr/\u003eGovernment lawyers say Microsoft is using its dominance of the industry to keep competitors from gaining a foothold in the market.\u003cbr/\u003eThe antitrust lawsuit alleges that this dominance keeps rivals from successfully selling software to run programs and access the Internet.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a Microsoft spokesman says this is about competitors who simply are not up to the competition. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"In the days ahead we will show that the government's case is a groundless exercise designed to benefit just a handful of Microsoft's competitors who do not compete with us on the merits of their technology. This is not a case designed or that will accomplish any benefit for consumers.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: William Neukom, Vice President Law and Corporate Affairs, Microsoft Corporation\u003cbr/\u003eRising consumer demand in the computer industry has raised the stakes in the case for Microsoft and its challengers.\u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft does not deny it has gained the position as the largest software company in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThis position of strength is due largely to the success of its Windows software programs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest version, Windows 98, is used by a huge majority of people who own personal computers sold in the U-S.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government says this fact has allowed Microsoft to unfairly influence hardware makers.\u003cbr/\u003eIn particular, government lawyers say Microsoft uses its position to entice other companies to distribute Microsoft's own Internet software over that of its chief rival, Netscape Communications. \u003cbr/\u003eNetscape got a jump on Microsoft as the pioneer in offering software that allows users to search the Internet with relative ease and speed. \u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft has been in a heated battle in recent months to market its own Internet Explorer search software against Netscape.  \u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft lawyers denies that the company is forcing computer makers to use its own Internet software.\u003cbr/\u003eRather, they say it is simply a matter of Microsoft's product being  better than Netscape's. \u003cbr/\u003eThey argue that in a free market, that competitive advantage should not be suppressed. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"We will show that none of Microsoft's actions has in any way foreclosed Netscape's ability to distribute its technology in the marketplace. more to this case than pitting one product against another.\u003cbr/\u003eIn their opening arguments on Monday, they produced excerpts of internal Microsoft memos detailing efforts to encourage hardware makers -- such as microchip maker Intel -- not to make changes in products that would hurt Microsoft. \u003cbr/\u003eIn one memo to Intel's chairman, Gates urged Intel to abandon its development of \"native signal processing,\" which would improve the multimedia capabilities of computers.\u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft lawyers countered that Gates was warning against incompatibility with Windows, not that the process threatened the need for Windows. \u003cbr/\u003eBut government lawyers insist the documents reveal a pattern of activity designed to unfairly influence computer makers to
