But Iraq is going through a very extraordinary and exceptional circumstances, and it has it has own legislation and laws. We expect others also to respect Iraqi legislation and Iraqi justice. Saddam Hussein was given a fair trial and he was sentenced to death for the crimes he has committed. Many other countries expressed similar concerns over the death penalty but we, in Iraq, aspire to the day when we also ban death penalty but since we are facing an enemy that kills Iraqis indiscriminately, that is creating mayhem, some deterrents are needed to stop more killing and more bloodshed. former Iraqi officials, in comments on Tuesday during a stop in Italy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Italian government has been pushing for a worldwide moratorium against the death penalty.\u003cbr/\u003eIraq's Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said he could understand the Italian government's position on the death penalty.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Iraq is going through extraordinary and exceptional circumstances,\" said Zebari after a meeting in Rome with his Italian counterpart, Massimo D'Alema. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are looking forward to the day when there will be no death penalty in Iraq,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eBut \"we need a strong deterrent,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eSaddam's December 30, 2006 execution was denounced across Italy's political spectrum, with former premier and conservative opposition leader Silvio Berlusconi calling the killing a political error and Premier Romano Prodi expressing concern that the hanging would fuel more violence in Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gruesome decapitation of Saddam's half brother when he was hanged two weeks later horrified many worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter Saddam's execution, Prodi's centre-left-government began a diplomatic push to have the moratorium initiative taken up by the UN (United Nations) General Assembly. \u003cbr/\u003eLast week, D'Alema said he would urge EU (European Union) countries at a meeting on January 22 to agree on a common strategy to help stop executions around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eItaly and all other EU countries do not permit capital punishment.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, countries including the Unites States, Japan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and China have the death penalty.\u003cbr/\u003eZebra was in Rome to sign a cooperation treaty with Italy in such fields as education, the environment and the
