Close of maple bacon doughnut \u003cbr/\u003eFor some it's a gastronomical match made in heaven: fried chicken and donuts.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the American duo can be bought together from the latest fast food outlet in the US - but nutritionists warn not to make the high calorie combo a daily treat.\u003cbr/\u003eAstro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken opens at midday but the queue outside begins forming as early as 11am.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery day the little start-up shop is sold out within the first ninety minutes of trade.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople, it seems, cannot get enough of the fried chicken - donut combination. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the steep price tag, where a dozen donuts sells for 30 US dollars and four pieces of fried chicken for ten US dollars - the sugary and savoury combination hits the spot in the local foodie market. \u003cbr/\u003eAstro's beginnings are credited to a nostalgic chat between best pals, Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen they were young, they used to celebrate hockey game wins with a fresh donut. \u003cbr/\u003eIn mid conversation, a wild idea occurred, what if they sold doughnuts with fried chicken? \u003cbr/\u003eA shop across town - GBD - was selling the same cuisine and flourishing. It was so crazy that it might just work, as Spaisman says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's two All-American foods that people love and that I love. It's my favourite foods. So, just combine the two - using good quality ingredients and fresh products - and it turned out great.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eAfter months of pop-up shops and event catering, the small company made the leap into buying a shop in downtown Washington D.C and are riding the outlandish trend to the top.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fried chicken and donut combination has a short but successful history.\u003cbr/\u003eBack in October 2011, a shop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania called \"Federal Donuts\" claimed to be the first place in the US to sell the two foods together. \u003cbr/\u003eThey could barely keep up with demand and say they sold out daily. \u003cbr/\u003eInspired by Federal Donut's instant success, various specialty shops in New York City opened too, hoping to attract similar foodies in the Big Apple.\u003cbr/\u003eFinally, the demand came to Washington DC. \u003cbr/\u003eThe shop 'Golden Brown and Delicious' - or GBD - opened its doors earlier in 2013 as a sit-down restaurant, catering to fried chicken and donut diners.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd, seeing a hole in the donut market, Astro leapt at being 'the' lunch spot for fried chicken and donut addicts.\u003cbr/\u003eJason Gehring says he had never heard of the craze before he signed on as head chef. \u003cbr/\u003eHe works in the kitchen, located in the basement of the shop. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce a new batch is finished, he sends it up to the shop via a dumbwaiter.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe fries close to 160 pounds (72 kilograms) of chicken and some one thousand doughnuts a day.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, in all the excitement of fried chicken and donuts, it's easy to forget to ask the question - isn't this food trend unhealthy?\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, nutritionists have a hard time battling new emerging trends like these. \u003cbr/\u003eThey recommended a daily intake of some two thousand calories a day for women and two and half thousand per day for men. \u003cbr/\u003eTo put it in perspective, two pieces of fried chicken and one donut is estimated as containing aorund 680 calories. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd then there is the high salt content.\u003cbr/\u003eThe American Heart Association recommends one thousand five hundred milligrams of sodium a day for adults. \u003cbr/\u003eA meal at Astro can easily rack up half of that.\u003cbr/\u003eNutritionist Judy Caplan says she suggests a balanced diet and this it is not a combination she would recommend.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It goes against what common sense is today: don't eat fried foods, don't eat a lot of processed meats. Wow. Yes, that's beautiful. That is stunningly delicious.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Yes, that was worth the wait.\" \u003cbr/\u003eWhile consultant Jonathan Su is also positive.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Interesting yet delightful.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSo perhaps this trend is not set to end yet.\u003cbr/\u003eAstro say they're excited to take the trend one step further and introduce the fried chicken and donut sandwich.
