Various of unloading of aid from plane\u003cbr/\u003eA plane loaded with a shipment of US emergency aid arrived in flood-stricken North Korea on Saturday, in the latest sign of a thaw in relations between the countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cargo plane, packed with more than 900,000 US dollars worth of medical aid, soap, blankets and cooking kits, and food, touched down at Pyongyang''s Sunan airport in darkness, late on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eAPTN North Korea filmed workers unloading the plane, and a group of officials from Samaritan''s Purse, the US NGO that led organisation as they arrived to watch the aid delivery process.\u003cbr/\u003eThe flood aid is \"an expression of the love and concern of the American people, wanting to help the people of the DPR of Korea during a very difficult time,\" said Melvin Cheatham of Samaritan''s Purse, standing next the plane.\u003cbr/\u003eThe DPRK, or Democratic People''s Republic of Korea, is North Korea''s formal name.\u003cbr/\u003eSamaritan''s Purse said it has pledged 1.2 (m) million US dollars in addition to the 900,000 US dollars that the US government has allocated for aid to North Korea through US-based charities.\u003cbr/\u003eA team from Samaritan''s Purse will stay on in North Korea to monitor distribution of the flood aid, and continue its assessment of the country''s food needs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe help comes after US and North Korean officials met in New York in late July for talks seen as a sign of a thaw in relations between the wartime foes.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficials say they discussed ways to restart nuclear disarmament negotiations that have been stalled for more than two years. Washington says Pyongyang must prove its commitment to dismantling its nuclear arms programmes before the talks on providing aid in exchange for disarmament can resume.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea and the US signed a truce in 1953 to bring the Korean War to a close, but have not signed a peace treaty and do not have diplomatic relations. Pyongyang cites the US military presence in South Korea as a main reason for the need to build atomic weapons.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korea has been reaching out recently for help in the wake of autumn flooding last year, an unusually harsh winter and more heavy rain this spring and summer.\u003cbr/\u003eHeavy rain and tropical storms have pounded North Korea in the past few months, displacing nearly 30,000 people and killing dozens, according to the International Federation of the Red Cross.\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Food Programme said earlier this year that an estimated 6 (m) million of North Korea''s population of 24 (m) million would go hungry without help from outside donors due to the impact on the harvest.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, there are persistent concerns among some governments that aid to the North is routinely diverted to the powerful military.\u003cbr/\u003eWashington has not responded with food aid, but pledged to provide emergency help for the
