Wide of river and damaged houses at edge\u003cbr/\u003eThe beleaguered residents of Pakistan's northwest, ravaged by massive floods that killed at least 1,500 people, were on Thursday slowly returning to their shattered homes and trying to salvage what they could of their lives, as the government came under renewed criticism for its response to the worst monsoon rains in decades.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Charsada, many people were sleeping in the open, and thick mud covered the ground, scattered with people's belongings left there when the floodwaters receded.\u003cbr/\u003eTilawat Shah and his family left in a rush six days ago. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When the floods reached our village I took my children on my shoulder and got out with a lot of difficulty, as the water level was rising up to my neck in a matter of  minutes,\" Shah said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"After six days I have returned to find that there's nothing left of my house,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eRescue workers in the northwest have struggled to deliver aid because of washed-out bridges and roads and downed  communication lines. \u003cbr/\u003eAlmost 700 people have drowned in the Peshawar valley, which includes the districts of Nowshera and Charsada, and 115 others are still missing, a disaster management official has said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe districts of Swat and Shangla have also been hit hard and have suffered more than 400 deaths, according to the head of rescue services for the Edhi Foundation, a private charity.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents of Swat Valley were still trying to recover from a major battle between the army and the Taliban last spring that caused widespread destruction and drove some two (m) million people from their homes. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout one (m) million of those were still displaced.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Swat alone, the floods have destroyed more than 14,600 houses and 22 schools.\u003cbr/\u003eGul Zaman is a fruit farmer who lost his peaches and berries due to the massive flooding.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I built this house with my lifetime earnings. I have lost everything,\" he said, as he set about clearing away debris.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter causing huge destruction in the northwest, the epicentre of the fight against al-Qaida and the Taliban, floodwaters have moved down the country and deluged villages and some urban centres in Punjab, the richest and most populous province. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the flooding is from the River Indus, which originates in the Himalayas and travels through the country.\u003cbr/\u003eMonsoon season in Pakistan usually lasts about three months, through mid-September. In a typical year, the country gets an average 137 mm (5.4 inches) worth of rainfall during the monsoon season. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year, it already has received 160 mm (6.3 inches), according to head of the National Weather Forecasting Centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rains are falling about 25 to 30 percent above normal rates, he said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe northwest experienced \"once-in-a-century\" rains, hitting it the hardest. \u003cbr/\u003eRain is expected there in coming days, though at normal levels that should allow some recovery. The vast majority of deaths have been reported in the northwest region.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral foreign countries, including the United States, have stepped in to help. \u003cbr/\u003eBut many flood victims have complained that aid is not reaching them fast enough or at all, expressing anger that could grow as flooding spreads to new
