At the same time with more products you  will see an improvement in the quality of service.  And at the same time there will be  pressure on these companies to probably lower their prices.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Jose Noel Mendoza, Vice President, Urbancorp Investments\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere in Asia, in Hong Kong practically everyone has a telephone.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd many people keep their phones with them all the time, but this potentially profit- rich market has been far from open.\u003cbr/\u003eCommunications in the colony have long been provided by the powerful Hong Kong  Telecom - the majority (58 percent) of which is owned by the U-K's Cable and Wireless.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd their control of the market has prompted threats of action before the World Trade  Organisation - the W-T-O.\u003cbr/\u003eThis, together with commitments to free trade that Hong Kong made through APEC,  has prompted the Office of the Telecommunications Authority to licence other  companies to provide some services. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Hong Kong Telecom does not have a full monopoly.  We have already deregulated the  local fixed services last year and we have issued three additional licenses for operating  local companies in Hong Kong.  As far as international exclusive rights is concerned,  again, it's not a total monopoly we are looking at.  We have in April issued a statement  stating that there are a number of services which we consider to be outside the scope  of these exclusive licenses, which are going to be competitively licensed in the near  future.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Anthony Wong, Deputy Director, Office of the Telecommunications  Authority \u003cbr/\u003eWong points to the proliferation of foreign-made instruments, particularly cellphones, as  a sign of a competitive market.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also says that Hong Kong companies are well-equipped to compete globally in  offering communications services.\u003cbr/\u003eOne area where those companies would like to compete is China.\u003cbr/\u003eThe huge Chinese market is opening rapidly, but still offers citizens a mediocre service.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd although China has let many foreign companies enter the market for instruments  and certain other equipment, open competition is yet to come.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a forum on investment in China, the U-S telecoms giant A-T-and-T's top man in the  country gave his view on why the transition there may be slow.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's not so long ago that I could remember having been with A-T-and-T for more than 30  years, when we were a monopoly.
