We must recycle air, we must recycle water, and eventually we have  to grow our own food and recover resources from solid waste. So the advanced life  support programme is moving in that direction to bring these technologies to fruition for  eventual application and possible return to the moon and missions to Mars, human  missions to Mars.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Don Henninger, Chief Scientist \u003cbr/\u003eThe volunteer crew entered the three storey, 20-foot diameter chamber in January.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring its 60-days aboard the test chamber, the crew is also examining how  confinement of a spacecraft affects sleep patterns, morale and stress.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crew members have been living and working just as if they were on an actual space  mission.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt a press conference via closed-circuit television, crew members spoke with reporters  about their experiences in the chamber, and what it is like to perform a two-month  dress rehearsal for an actual space trip. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"You get a feel for what type of maintenance you might need to do and you also get a  feel of just how it feels to be in a small confined environment for a long period of time,  and also a number of things that work together, in terms of crew cohesion and also  communication and you can bring in all of the experiments that we're doing that are  basically foreshadowing things that we might be doing on space stations.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Fred Smith, Crew Member\u003cbr/\u003eThere is one major difference between this experience and actual space travel - this  crew has gravity.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also have the option of outsiders bringing them more food should they run out.\u003cbr/\u003eThis crew says the most interesting experience they've had on this mission is the  process of recycling water.\u003cbr/\u003eThey recycle all water, including their own urine, using this multi-filtration unit.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd they do it every day.\u003cbr/\u003eYou might think that the water would taste less than desirable, but these crew  members all say they've been very pleased with their recycled water.\u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, they told reporters they actually prefer it over the water they're used to at home.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I didn't even notice a difference in the that until I had been on board five or six days.
