The Thai version of the story is known as the Ramakien.
This dancer plays the role of Phra Pipek, a demon character from Thai mythology.
Many other ornate, hand-carved masks are regularly used in other performances.
The troupe relies on 50 small puppets handcrafted by Joe Louis himself.
Before each show, the group briefly meditates to help develop the focus they will need for demanding performances.
The most challenging thing for performers is coordinating the puppets'' movements in teams.
Each puppet is manipulated by three people, so they must work in unison in order to create animated, life-like movements.
Thai small puppets are unique because they are able to replicate a range of human gestures and emotions.
For instance, the puppets can move their wrists to ''wai'', a greeting gesture in Thai culture.
The puppets can also embrace and show affection, clap, shake or nod their heads, and point their fingers.
One puppeteer in each trio is the leader and uses his or her hands to move the puppet''s face and give the impression it is speaking.
The second person controls the puppet''s feet in dance-like steps.
The third puppeteer moves the puppet''s arms.
The head must be directed to move left or right, up or down. The body and the feet must also move in dance-like steps. Every gesture and movement must be synchronised and made with precision.
Only if the three puppeteers communicate well and work harmoniously will they be able to achieve an impressive and believable performance.
"We first have to have is the ability to work together and the ability of humility to realise that there are three of us," says puppet master Narit Yangkhieosod. "If we have too much confidence or ego then the performance is going to have friction. If three of us brings one of these then the performance will be great for sure."
The performers each trained for between three to five years, and practiced for several more before they were invited to appear on this stage.
"It was just wonderful," says Lori Rausch, from Atlanta, Georgia. "The costumes were beautiful, the story was wonderful, and the way the people worked the puppets was just magnificent. I forgot about them after a while when the story was going on because they moved so well that you forget that they were even being manipulated by a person."
The performance and puppets not only represent remarkable craftsmanship and artistry, but they inspire deep pride among many Thais.
"I think this show is important for Thai culture because in order for our country to progress, it must have a strong foundation in performance," says Achiraya Mormuang, a spectator from Bangkok. "If we only accept shows from foreign cultures, this will make Thai arts performances vanish."
The show''s climax features an appearance by the performer dressed as Phra Pipek, the demon character from Thai mythology.
