Simpson took the stand Friday to answer accusations that he murdered his ex-wife and her friend.\u003cbr/\u003eHe arrived at the Santa Monica courthouse amid cheers and jeers from the large crowd that had gathered outside.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year, Simpson was acquitted in the June 1994 murders of Nicole Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.\u003cbr/\u003eThe victims' families are now suing Simpson in civil court on charges of wrongful death.\u003cbr/\u003eO.J. Simpson was back in court Friday, again trying to prove his innocence in the deaths of his ex-wife and her friend.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the civil trial will have one big difference from the criminal trial which ended in his acquittal.\u003cbr/\u003eO.J. is taking the stand.\u003cbr/\u003eShouts of  \"Murderer! Murderer!\" rang out as he walked briskly past the crowd to the courthouse.\u003cbr/\u003eSimpson's attorney Robert Baker smiled when he was booed.\u003cbr/\u003eA group of white women that supports Simpson started yelling, \"O.J. is innocent, O.J. is innocent,\" but another group yelled back, \"Guilty, guilty, guilty.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhen plaintiff attorney Daniel Petrocelli arrived with the Goldman family, there was applause and screams of \"white justice\".\u003cbr/\u003eLast year, Simpson was acquitted in the June 12, 1994 murders of Ms. Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in a trial that attracted unprecedented media attention and underscored deep racial tensions in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThe victims' families are now suing Simpson in civil court.\u003cbr/\u003eSimpson never testified at his televised criminal trial, explaining later he feared the sequestered jury was growing too weary. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso, he was spared incriminating himself and jeopardizing what proved to be a winning defence. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth sides have made it clear that Simpson's testimony is key, perhaps pivotal, to the outcome. \u003cbr/\u003eHis statements, demeanour, consistency and credibility all will be\u003cbr/\u003escrutinized.\u003cbr/\u003eOutside the courthouse, it was clear the trial that split the nation still stirs the emotions of observers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm expecting to hear him try to use his charisma to get past the truth.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Bruno Malis (make of shoes used in prosecution case) do not lie. If the toeprint fits, you must convict.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSixteen people, and five alternates, were chosen from the crowd today to be in the room when Simpson testifies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crowd started arriving at 4 a.m.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 200 stubs were placed in a glass bowl and at 7:15 a.m., a court employee and sheriff's deputy pulled out the winning numbers.\u003cbr/\u003eDozens of cameras were lined up along the gauntlet from the street to the courthouse door.\u003cbr/\u003eThe intense media pressure reflects the interest that continues in the trial that split the United States on issues on race, wealth and domestic violence.\u003cbr/\u003eSimpson was arrested June 17, 1994, and charged with murder. \u003cbr/\u003eHe spent 474 days in jail during the long, tumultuous trial and acquittal last October.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the acquittals, the families of the victims filed wrongful death lawsuits, claiming he was responsible for the slayings and should be made to pay.\u003cbr/\u003eSanta Monica, California,  22 November 1996\u003cbr/\u003e1.
