Various of Dejic and daughter\u003cbr/\u003eMore than one hundred Serbian officers from the Kosovo Police Service did not show up for work in eastern Kosovo on Thursday in protest at Kosovo's recent declaration of independence from Serbia.\u003cbr/\u003eVeton Elshani, a KPS spokesman, told AP Television they were \"still collecting information as to how many police officers did not show up for duty,\" and he said that the police service's main head quarters in Pristina would have to decide what to do about the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television spoke to one of those striking police officers, Stojan Dejic, at his home in the Serb enclave of Kusce.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explained that Kosovo's declaration of independence has put them in a difficult position.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Since the proclamation of independence, a divide has been created. The Serbian community is unsatisfied with this decision. For our people now (the Serbs), we don't come across as leaders serving the people but as traitors working against their own people. So we unilaterally decided to stop working under the regional command,\" Dejic said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe KPS was created in 1999 in the aftermath of the NATO bombing campaign and subsequent withdrawal of the Yugoslav and forces from Kosovo and has grown steadily since 1999.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2004, the KPS reached its planned full size of nearly 7-thousand officers. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 85% of KPS officers are ethnic Albanians, 15% are ethnic Serbs as well as other smaller ethnic minorities.\u003cbr/\u003eKosovo's independence was swiftly recognised by the US and major European powers. \u003cbr/\u003eSome EU nations, however, have criticised the move, while Russia has come out strongly in support of Serbia's opposition to Kosovo becoming independent.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 100-thousand Serbs remain in Kosovo ignoring Kosovo's independence and threatening to set up their own institutions in Kosovo's northern areas, where most Serbs live.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vast majority of Kosovo's population is ethnic Albanian. \u003cbr/\u003eSerbs represent just 10 percent of the region's 2 (m) million people, but they view Kosovo as the cradle of their culture and Orthodox Christian
