Hardy and Logan then designed the app having won a work space at a London-based start-up incubator.\u003cbr/\u003eEdge uses GPS technology to provide skiers and snowboarders with slope analytics including speed, distance and vertical change.\u003cbr/\u003eUsers can then share that information on social media sites including Facebook and Foursquare to compete with friends or keep personal records.\u003cbr/\u003eThe students' school, Eton College in Windsor, is an independent boarding school for 13 to 18-year-old boys. Former students include the UK's Prime Minister, David Cameron, and Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge.\u003cbr/\u003eHaving both achieved top grades at GCSE, Logan and Hardy are now in the process of studying for their A-levels, but they still find time to work on Edge outside of classes.\u003cbr/\u003eLogan says one inspiration was other smart phone activity apps.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was a lot of running and a lot cycling in cities particularly where there were these apps popping up for tracking and information,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was basically competing against each other in specific tracks around London that made us think, 'Well hang on, why doesn't this happen for skiing?\"\u003cbr/\u003eHaving begun to create Edge, Hardy says they discovered a wealth of interest from winter sports fans for exploring and analysing their slope runs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are lots of new sensors on the market, people are really interested in the data that they're accumulating during these sports,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They want to see the speed that they hit when they went over that jump, they want to see the vertical distance, the altitude, all that kind of information that previously they've not even been aware of. It's suddenly coming to the forefront and it's a way to compete and further enjoy your experience on the mountains.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSlope analytics is just one part of Hardy and Logan's ski app.\u003cbr/\u003eBuilding on their resort website, Edge also features a database of around 600 ski resorts with detailed reviews of venues - from restaurants to ski hire.\u003cbr/\u003eHardy says it's all about giving tourists more choice when it comes to organising their own winter trips.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's helpful for them to see the venue's around the resort,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Previously you'd kind of stick with a group and you didn't have the information available to you to truly understand the venues around the resort. With us, we're seamlessly hooked in with Foursquare, you don't need an account to sign in, just go on, tap a venue and you can flick through the photos, get a feel for the venue that you're visiting and then make the decision to go there.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the creation of their app, Hardy and Logan have received backing from some reputable investors.\u003cbr/\u003eEntrepreneur Frank Meehan, who mentored and backed Nick D'Aloisio - a British schoolboy who last year sold his news-summary app 'Summly' to Yahoo for millions - is among their investors.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, Edge can claim 35 million metres skied and 1,000 unique resort check-ins since launching in December 2013.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Logan and Hardy aren't content with just bringing social media to the slopes, in the future they plan to create similar apps for other sports such as biking.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Hardy, that's where social media is headed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There's something about sitting behind a computer to socialise with people that's almost in a way not sociable at all,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When you're competing in sports you're typically doing that with friends so,we think the natural evolution of the social network will be through sports and we hope that we can be at the forefront of that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOut here on the slopes at Zugspitze Mountain in Germany, winter sport fans are excited by the possibilities of tracking their own downhill runs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's like extra fun,\" says Susanne Matena, a snowboarder from the Netherlands.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Snowboarding is already fun but having an app like this you can measure your speed and stuff like that. It's great because normally it is already cool snowboarding, but measuring your speed gives extra fun.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSkier Ferenc Bodor from Germany agrees.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think it is cool,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Before I was going down a very steep part and I was going quite fast and I was wondering exactly how fast I really was. So I think that when I get home I will download this.
