Wide of path\u003cbr/\u003eAn ageing population and dire economic prospects have emptied the remote villages and rough stone houses of the northerly Galicia region in Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter years of negative demographics and constant migration from one of the country's poorest regions hundreds of small hamlets, many country houses are now at the mercy of the elements.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cycle started to turn slightly during Spain's decade long economic boom: the villages were bought-up buy affluent Spaniards as a property investment, riding on the seemingly never ending property wave.\u003cbr/\u003eThis however has come to messy end with record unemployment and a stagnant economy. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is now foreigners who are snapping-up picturesque properties at discount prices.\u003cbr/\u003ePepe Rodil is the sales-representative of one of the most successful websites in Spain selling abandoned villages, www.aldeasabandonadas.com.\u003cbr/\u003eHe looks around one the site's most interesting offers, a huge country house with electricity and water with over 20 acres of land, its asking price is approximately 100,000 euros (131,000 US dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eIt is just north of the major town of Lugo and just 17kms (10.5 miles) from the stunning coastline between Galicia and Asturias.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is never going to be straight forward business selling properties or groups of them, when there may be dozens of heirs often in far-flung corners of globe. It is Pepe's main headache.\u003cbr/\u003eThe principle purchasers of the villages are now foreigners.\u003cbr/\u003eRetired TV engineer Neil Christie is one of the many Britons snapping up property in the village.\u003cbr/\u003eChristie now has 6 properties and his plan is to rent out the reconstructed homes as holiday apartments. \u003cbr/\u003eThe property he is working on today is planned to be his family home. He still can' t believe how cheap it was. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If you have some skills and you are prepared to get into it yourself, then I would say yes, \" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eBut you've got to be dedicated because there are times when you think: why am I doing this? And there are times when you come here and look around and think: I know why I'm doing this, now.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile local population make it known they are not too pleased about the foreign arrivals, the mayor of Ponte Novo Dario Campos has no such concerns.\u003cbr/\u003eHe thinks the move is vital to help start repopulating deserted villages.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I would definitely recommend this iniciative, specially in places like Galicia or Asturias where there is one basic problem on rural areas: depopulation, emigration, lack of people,\" Campos said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People die and they can not, let's say, generate other people, there are no kids. So this is a good thing for places where this problem exists, also to restore the houses and sustain the environment.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Spanish National Institute of Statistics calculates over 3.000 uninhabited villages across the country, 1,408 of these are in Galicia. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever only a small percentage of these are for sale. \u003cbr/\u003ewww.aldeasabandonadas.com now have their
