Tabbaa speaking at podium\u003cbr/\u003eFive Muslim-Americans who were fingerprinted, searched and held for as long as six and a-half hours by US border agents on their return from a religious conference in Canada, filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the US Department of Homeland Security.\u003cbr/\u003eThe suit, in the US District Court in Brooklyn, charges that the government violated the group's constitutional rights to practice religion and against unlawful searches.\u003cbr/\u003eDonna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, which filed the suit with the American Civil Liberties Union and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the lawsuit is not about money damages, but about vindicating individual rights.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plaintiffs were among at least three dozen Muslim-American men and women who were stopped at two western New York border crossings in December while trying to re-enter the United States by car after attending the annual \"Reviving the Islamic Spirit\" conference in Toronto, Canada.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plaintiffs, all of whom live in New York, said they had to surrender credit cards, cell phones and other belongings and were searched, questioned, fingerprinted and photographed without explanation.\u003cbr/\u003eShortly after the incident, a Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman said agents were acting on information that conferences like the one they attended can be a means for terrorists to promote their cause.\u003cbr/\u003eA call to the department seeking comment on the legal action wasn't immediately returned on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe suit, whose plaintiffs include an orthodontist and her college-student son, a teaching assistant, a graduate student and a hotel manger, seeks an injunction which would prohibit the government from such action in the future.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group also wants the fingerprints and photographs collected that night to be expunged.\u003cbr/\u003eCivil rights advocates accused the government of adopting a policy that targets religious conferences.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this month, a Homeland Security civil rights official travelled to Buffalo in the US in response to concerns over the incident. Daniel Sutherland, the Washington-based officer for civil rights and civil liberties, declined to say why the searches had taken place but said officials had made policy changes to prevent a repeat of the situation.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral of those stopped said people were reduced to tears by the experience, which lasted overnight.
