Runners line up for the start of the 11th...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eMore than 40-thousand runners have been pounding the pavements of the Lebanese capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have been taking part in the 11th International Beirut Marathon and raising money for charity. \u003cbr/\u003eRunners line up for the start of the 11th International Beirut Marathon.\u003cbr/\u003eThe starter's gun fires and they are off - on a 26 miles (42 kilometre) race. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are more than 40,000 runners taking part in today's event - with the marathon growing more popular every year.\u003cbr/\u003eNot all the runners are taking part in the full marathon event - with 10 kilometre and five kilometre classes for less experienced athletes.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is also a special one kilometre class for parents taking part with young children.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it's not just about the running, according to organiser May Khalil, but also about raising money for charity.\u003cbr/\u003e\"With respect to the participation we have reached 40,000 participants who came to challenge themselves. Over 22 to 24,000 are running for charity organisations, carrying a very important humanitarian task. The running culture is not any more only about reaching the finish line, but also helping charity organisations and funding them,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are many tasks for the marathon, it is a sporting event and it is also driving the economy with more than three million (US dollars) moving around such an activity.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCrowds line the streets and cheer on the competitors - there is even a Lebanese army band on the route, restoring a bit of rhythm to exhausted legs.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the runners is Maya Metri. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are today in this race to participate in this nice sportive day and to prove to the entire world what Lebanon is, Lebanon is joy and love, Lebanon is not war, killing and destruction,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the hard work of running a marathon begins a long time before the big day.\u003cbr/\u003eHours and hours of training needs to be completed to condition the body for the strain and stress.\u003cbr/\u003ePounding the pavements before the start of the race along Beirut's picturesque seafront, joggers are putting in some last minute miles.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Nadine Moubayet, 40, this year's marathon is her first. \u003cbr/\u003eShe's one of 50 runners trained by Beirut 542, an organisation which is promoting running in Lebanon. \u003cbr/\u003eMoubayet says she has transformed her lifestyle over the last six months, and running has played a major part in this.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is something new, it is a challenge. For me it was different. I quit smoking six months ago. And it just came up. I'm gaining weight and running would help and God it's addictive. I never thought running is addictive and actually it is addictive and you start and then you don't want to stop,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Beirut marathon is one of only two official marathons in the Middle East, the other is in Dubai.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers hope the event will win the IAAF's (International Association of Athletics Federation) silver label and be recognised among the world's top marathon events alongside Cologne, Hong Kong and Madrid. \u003cbr/\u003eThe highest level marathons are awarded gold status - like London, New York and Berlin.\u003cbr/\u003eEthiopian athlete Rehime Kedir Robel has won today's women's marathon in Beirut, with a race-winning time of 2:33:29.\u003cbr/\u003eThe men's race was won by Kenyan William Kipsang who finished in 2:13:34.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television\u003cbr/\u003eBeirut, Lebanon - 9 November 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
