They had turned away from their OWN beef stocks because of fears about the wide spread use of illegal hormones in Belgian cattle..\u003cbr/\u003eThey had switched to British beef, but now shops and restaurants are taking beef off the shelves and menus.\u003cbr/\u003eBeef is an increasingly rare sight in Belgium.\u003cbr/\u003eApart from the crisis over British beef,  the wide spread use of illegal hormones used to fatten cattle has seriously damaged the image of Belgium's own meat industry. \u003cbr/\u003eSales of beef have plummeted over the last few years, as consumers turn their backs on the hormone treated meat. \u003cbr/\u003eThe E-U has been criticised for not policing meat products vigorously enough and admit the new scare caught them unaware.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't know if the confusion could have been avoided or not.
