Their Managing Director of Public Affairs and Policy Anthony Hayes called the loss \"devastating.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"With the level of work these men and women were doing, it's easy to see how the loss could be devastating in the short and long term in terms of finding a cure for HIV and AIDS,\" said Hayes.\u003cbr/\u003eHayes went on to say that the loss of these researchers also means a loss of \"that institutional memory about where the epidemic's been, where it is today, and where we'll be in the future.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMalaysia Airlines Flight 17, heading from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, crashed Thursday with 298 people on board. American intelligence authorities believe a surface-to-air missile brought down the aircraft, but it was not yet clear who fired it.\u003cbr/\u003eJoep Lange had been working on HIV since the earliest years of the epidemic, participating in clinical trials and research across the world. \u003cbr/\u003eA precise number of passengers who were bound for the conference could not immediately be determined.
