B-roll guests dancing\u003cbr/\u003eStars gathered at the glittering launch of TIM BURTON'S 'Planet of the Apes' in New York last night (23July01).\u003cbr/\u003eThe director was joined by members of his cast for the premiere of the remake at the Ziegfeld Theater, which was followed by an aftershow party complete with pretend gorillas to complete the simian atmosphere.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish actress HELENA BONHAM CARTER (Room With a View, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein), leaves her English Rose look behind to play chimpanzee activist Ari in the $100 million (ÂŁ70.4 million) version of the film by 20th Century Fox.\u003cbr/\u003eFormer Sports Illustrated model and synchronized swimmer ESTELLA WARREN (Driven) plays Daena the human female lead, and glowed about working with Tim Burton.\u003cbr/\u003eTim Burton in turn glowed about his cast, crediting his actors with coming up with ape mannerisms and paying tribute to his lead MARK WAHLBERG for getting 'beaten up by apes every day'\u003cbr/\u003eThe first version of the movie was made in 1968, starring CHARLTON HESTON (Ben-Hur, Airport) as Leo, an astronaut stranded on a future earth where talking apes dominate mute humans.\u003cbr/\u003eHeston appears in the 2001 version as an ape - General Thade's father.  He told reporters at the premiere the original idea was an extraordinary one, the first of the space operas.\u003cbr/\u003eWahlberg (Boogie Nights, The Perfect Storm)  sat close to Heston during the screening.  Afterwards he told reporters his predecessor seemed happy with the new film, as did the gathered audience - 'my job is done'.\u003cbr/\u003eFans have already been told the action this time round doesn't take place on earth, and there's not much point expecting to see a beached statue of liberty.  Instead, we're promised a different surprise ending, and critics as well as fans have long been champing at the bit to see the new Planet of the Apes through Burton's eyes.\u003cbr/\u003eHis trademark imagination unleashed in previous films like 'Edward Scissorhands', 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' 'Batman' and 'Sleepy Hollow' gets full reign, helped by twenty-first century special effects.  His apes are somewhat more convincing than those in the first movies, where rubber masks were used to create the simian faces - cutting edge at the time, but hopelessly dated now.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish actor TIM ROTH (Pulp Fiction, Captives) plays General Thade, and commented that the new intricate costumes made it difficult to move.  But KRIS KRISTOFFERSON (The Joyriders, Blade), who plays Karubi, was impressed by Roth and Bonham Carter's ability to act through the layers of makeup, saying 'I knew them immediately...I was really impressed\"\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the stars who came to see the finished movie were singer Aaliyah, R\u0026amp;B singer Brian McKnight and P.DIDDY, who gleefully told reporters his new name isn't P Diddy at all, but 'Herman'. \u003cbr/\u003e'Planet of the Apes' is released in Hong Kong on 26 July, North America on 27 July, and Japan \u0026amp; Taiwan on 28 July.
