Salman Khan and others hugging and kissing Asha \u003cbr/\u003eSonia Gandhi, leader of India's ruling United Progressive Alliance, joined with Bollywood stars to welcome scores of AIDS activists in New Delhi on Thursday as they participated in the 'AIDS Walk for Life', part of the World AIDS day programme.\u003cbr/\u003eVolunteers undertook a year-long walk across the country to create awareness about HIV/AIDS.\u003cbr/\u003eThe campaign was launched by Project Concern International in partnership with other government and non-government organisations like UNAIDS, USAID and National AIDS Control Organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe volunteers trained in AIDS education covered more than 6,800 kilometres across 13 states, spreading awareness about the pandemic in areas where conventional campaigns have not yet reached.   \u003cbr/\u003eAt a star-studded show in New Delhi in which Bollywood actors were also present, Sonia Gandhi stressed on the need to spread awareness about the dreaded disease and make freely available ways and means of prevention. \u003cbr/\u003eIndian film stars Salman Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Anil Kapoor joined cricket icon Kapil Dev in spreading the message of HIV/AIDS on World AIDS Day.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the rally, Salman Khan implored Indians to practise safe sex and use condoms.\u003cbr/\u003eKhan and Shilpa Shetty had starred in a film on HIV/AIDS- 'Phir Milenge' ('We Will Meet Again) in 2004.\u003cbr/\u003eThe actress told the volunteers: \"I had the opportunity of playing the role of an HIV victim and it was the single most traumatic experience of my life. It is then that I realised that it was the ignorance that was spreading this dreaded disease. It was the stigma and the discrimination that is attached to HIV and AIDS that needed to be debunked.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eAsha Ramaiyah, who is HIV-positive, shared her experiences and advice with the audience, comprising mostly of youth. \u003cbr/\u003eWith 5.13 million cases, India ranks second only to South Africa in terms of the number of people infected with HIV, the virus that causes
