Mid shot orangutan eating\u003cbr/\u003eScientists in the U.S. have conducted the first heart monitoring ultra-sound scan on an orangutan while it is awake.\u003cbr/\u003ePreviously tests could only be done under anaesthesia, which could be life threatening to an ape with heart disease. \u003cbr/\u003eHeart disease is a leading killer of great apes in captivity. \u003cbr/\u003eThese majestic animals make their home at Zoo Atlanta in the U.S.  \u003cbr/\u003eThey''re far away from the threat of habitat loss that is wiping out scores of their kind in the wild, but these orangutans in captivity have a different type of menace to fight.\u003cbr/\u003eHeart disease is the No.1 killer of orangutans, gorillas and other apes living in captivity and it''s threatening the work conservationists are doing to help increase the population of the endangered species. \u003cbr/\u003eZoo Atlanta runs the Great Ape Heart Project - set up to understand, diagnose and treat heart disease in great apes.\u003cbr/\u003eHayley Murphy, director of veterinary services at Zoo Atlanta says: \"It''s a really important effort to look at understanding what it is. We don''t really know what is causing it. Once we can understand that, hopefully we can treat it. Our ultimate goal would be to prevent it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers have been collecting data on gorilla heart disease for a decade, but zoos are just now starting to gather that information on orangutans. \u003cbr/\u003eNine year-old Satu is the first of his kind to have an echocardiogram while he''s awake. \u003cbr/\u003eHe''s in full health, but he''s helping the researchers gather more information on how his heart works. \u003cbr/\u003eHealthy apes can be put under anaesthesia, but the drugs are dangerous for those already suffering from heart problems. \u003cbr/\u003eAwake procedures expand the amount of data researchers can collect.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the zoo is encouraging other organisations to do awake procedures and send in the data which will be included in the Great Ape Heart Project''s database. \u003cbr/\u003eMurphy says: \"Any data we can get on an orangutan is helpful because we don''t know what''s normal. We have no idea what normal reference ranges are in orangutans.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSatu and other orangutans at the zoo were trained for awake ultrasounds and blood tests through positive reinforcement using treats and praises. \u003cbr/\u003eIt took months of training to work up to a heart ultrasound that produced a usable image. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the work depends on donations and volunteers, including ultrasound technicians from local hospitals who perform the tests on their own time.\u003cbr/\u003eMurphy says: \"It''s really cool to be able to follow an animal from infancy to adulthood. Nobody''s ever done that, so it''s going to give us a lot of clues as to when does heart disease start? What does it look like when it starts? Does it change over time?\" \u003cbr/\u003e28 year-old Madu is being given treats for being an especially patient patient.  She''s been trained to allow the staff to take blood samples from her - something that once could only be done with the animal under anaesthesia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe blood will be used to establish biomarkers that can help chart the progression of heart disease and possible treatments. \u003cbr/\u003eThe researchers also hope to determine how similar apes and humans are when it comes to cardiac disease. The hearts look the same on an ultrasound, but that doesn''t necessarily mean that disease affects them the same way. \u003cbr/\u003eMurphy says: \"Same as the great apes to humans comparison doesn''t always work, we don''t if it works from gorillas to orangutans, orangutans to chimpanzees or chimpanzees to bonobos and so we''re looking at all four great ape species.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere are more than 200 orangutans at 55 zoos across the United States. The animals come from Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia, where deforestation and population growth has caused the Sumatran orangutan numbers to plummet to just 4,500. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers hope the
