Because if they were genuine, they would have told us 'ok we have given you 24 hours to leave Eldoret, if you are a Kikuyu leave,' but they didn't, they just started killing,\" Mary Wambui told AP Television, describing the situation in her hometown before she escaped the area.\u003cbr/\u003eAround 5,400 people have also fled to neighbouring Uganda and several hundred people have also fled to Tanzania, said officials from both countries.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, expatriates and aid workers were being evacuated from western Kenya - along with those who can afford the price of a helicopter. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They feel that fear of tribe turning against tribe and of the consequences that would happen if that comes,\" said Ellen Petry Leanse, a United States aid worker who was being evacuated from Kakamega.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal residents clamoured for the limited number of seats on one of the evacuation helicopters - with most getting left behind due to limited space. \u003cbr/\u003eOpposition leader, Raila Odinga accused the government of stoking the chaos, telling The Associated Press in an interview that Kibaki's administration is guilty of genocide.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What is happening is genocide on a grand scale because we are seeing the security forces of Mr. Kibaki shooting innocent civilians who are basically just expressing their democratic right of protest against rigging of elections,\" Odinga said.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever in one of the worst attacks, a mob set fire to a church Tuesday in a town about 185 miles (300 kilometres) northwest of Nairobi, killing up to 50 members of Kibaki's Kikuyu tribe who had taken refuge inside.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Nairobi shanty town of Mathare there was a heavy presence of riot police while angry young people armed with machetes and axes heaped abuse on the police as the shanty town burned.\u003cbr/\u003eAreas of Mathare were set alight and thousands of people were left homeless, as the angry mob carrying machetes and makeshift weapons gathered on the streets. \u003cbr/\u003eTalking to AP Television in Mathare, supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga predicted there would be no end to the violence until the right man was handed the presidency.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are saying: 'No Raila, no peace'. campaign has been seen as a failure, and the country still struggles with tribalism and poverty.\u003cbr/\u003eOdinga, cast himself as a champion of the poor and his main constituency is the Kibera shanty town, where some 700-thousand people live in poverty, but he has been accused of failing to do enough to help them in 15 years as a member of parliament.\u003cbr/\u003eKibaki was inaugurated
