Mid shot Roman Aurelian wall \u003cbr/\u003eWardens of an Italian cemetery reserved for non-Catholics say they are struggling to maintain  the ancient site. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Campo Cestio cemetery  also known as the Non-Catholic cemetery in Rome houses the graves of many famous non-Catholics including  the great English poets, Keats and Shelley.\u003cbr/\u003eThe non-Catholic cemetery is one of Rome's most beautiful hidden secrets. \u003cbr/\u003eLocated near the Porta San Paolo and across from the famous Pyramid of Cestius, more than four thousand non-Catholics are buried here.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe cemetery houses the tombs of scores of writers, painters and sculptors including English poets, John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley.  \u003cbr/\u003eAll the people buried here are required to be non-Catholic and non-Italian.  \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the site is often referred to as  \"Il Cimitero degli Inglesi\" (The English Cemetery) there are many nationalities  here including American, German, Greek and Japanese.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first known interment in the cemetery dates back to 1738.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe cemetery was built just inside the ancient city walls to keep the people buried there at a distance from the Catholics.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe cemetery is run by a committee formed from 14 Embassies in Rome which have citizens buried at the site.  \u003cbr/\u003eJulian Kleimann is a member of the cemetery's board of directors.   \u003cbr/\u003eHe explains that the original burials were done at night to avoid offending Rome's predominantly Catholic population.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the far corner of the older section of the cemetery stands the gravestone of English Poet John Keats.  \u003cbr/\u003eKeats died in Rome of tuberculosis in 1821 at the age of 25.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt his request written on his gravestone are the words, \"here Lies One Whose Name was writ in Water.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eKeats died in the arms of his close friend Joseph Severn whose gravestone is nearby.  \u003cbr/\u003eA vase at the foot of the two graves quotes the phrase of Keats, \"Beauty is Truth, truth beauty.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the newer section of the cemetery the grave of another Romantic Poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley can be found.  \u003cbr/\u003eShelley drowned off the coast of Tuscany at the age of 29 and was buried in 1822.   \u003cbr/\u003eOn his gravestone are the words:\u003cbr/\u003e\"nothing of him that doth fade, But doth suffer a sea-change, Into something rich and strange.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVisitor, Michele Garribba says that he doesn't even consider the place a cemetery but a part of the literary culture of the western world.\u003cbr/\u003eJ.W. Novotny from Pensacola, Florida  explains the story behind the tomb and Angel of Grief statue by US sculptor, William Wetmore Story. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006 the cemetery was added to the World Monument Fund's 2006 watch list of the 100 most endangered sites on Earth.   \u003cbr/\u003eUnlike Catholic cemeteries in Rome, the non-Catholic cemetery does not receive funds from the Vatican or the Italian government.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe board of directors rely on private contributions and  payments made by families of the dead to maintain the cemetery.  \u003cbr/\u003eA small box at the door asks for visitors to make a contribution.   \u003cbr/\u003eBoard member Julian Kliemann says they work hard to maintain the cemetery as a \"romantic and fascinating place\" but the maintenance is costly and they are always looking for generous donors.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cemetery already has some 4,000 graves but plots can still be reserved at the ancient
