Various of racers after the finish \u003cbr/\u003eVirtual reality software which allow groups of cyclists to race each other on the world's most courses is being used by scientists in Holland to help patients with Parkinson's disease.\u003cbr/\u003eA trial of the software which will allow them to virtually ride the Tour de France, or even the surface of the moon will begin later this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThese are biking enthusiasts and this year they're been given a personal introduction to the Tour de France.\u003cbr/\u003eOf course they're able to go and race along the course itself, but here they have the convenience of doing it at the London Boat Show.\u003cbr/\u003eThe software allows people in any country around the world to race on the course of their choosing, at the time they want, simultaneously.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is what has interested doctors at Radboud University, Nijmegen.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say they believe it will help slow down the progression of disease in patients with Parkinson's.\u003cbr/\u003eThe university hospital has already carried out a small study of ten patients and researchers are convinced that vigorous pedalling in particular boosted connections between brain regions linked to movement.\u003cbr/\u003eParkinson's disease is caused by a loss of nerve cells in a certain part of the brain responsible for producing the chemical dopamine. \u003cbr/\u003eDopamine acts as a messenger between the brain and the nervous system, and helps control and co-ordinate body movements.\u003cbr/\u003eIf these nerve cells become damaged or die, the amount of dopamine in the brain is reduced and the part of the brain controlling movement can't work properly.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is why the movements in people with the disease becomes slow and abnormal.\u003cbr/\u003eAs yet there's no proven cause of a loss of nerve cells associated with Parkinson's disease occurs.\u003cbr/\u003eHans Van Baren is helping to establish a bigger study at Radbout University in Holland this summer.\u003cbr/\u003eIt will carefully compare and calculates changes in 110 patients, half of whom will be treated with physiotherapy and the other half will take part in a virtual reality bike race twice a week.\u003cbr/\u003eVan Baren says: \"The brain is the central nerve system that controls your body, all your movements, your legs, your arms, your way of thinking, the way you manifest yourself, so that's the central system of your body and from the central nerve system you have control of your body. For a Parkinson's patient that's different.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVan Baren says a drawback of the traditional treatment is that patients lose interest and patience.\u003cbr/\u003eBy engaging them in a race the patients are keen to take part and even increase the amount of time they spend on exercise and recovery.\u003cbr/\u003eVan Baren says researchers chose virtual reality cycling for a specific reason.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"Of course they can use an outside bike, but they are unable to stop because they will drop off. If you see a Parkinson's patient walking they need support by one, or two people, but it's like a miracle once they sit on a bike they easily bike forward.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Van Baren there is a significant difference in results within six months.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the small study they tested their patients ability to move and control their hand and legs. \u003cbr/\u003eThey also tested their mental capabilities, how able they were to experience and understand what was happening around them and their emotional responses to that.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We try to focus on what actually was the winning factor. We found out it was the engagement of being in the game, being motivated, even a little muscle strength was gained and also the endurance was also an interesting factor and they were much more motivated to do the next session than the others because that was kind of boring, you know not to exciting and this is also interesting for the treatment of the patient in the long term.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVan Baren says researchers are already looking at virtual reality racing for applications in other areas of health care such as the treatment of depression and especially obesity in children.\u003cbr/\u003eThe software allows doctors and psychologists to ensure the participants are following the programme their doctors have given them.\u003cbr/\u003eThis all embracing control may not be popular in all countries, but Van Baren argues affirmative action is needed to reach a solution.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"It won't happen by just putting machines there.  What we need is endorsement from the national health societies (of different countries) insurers, pharmacists and I can tell you in Holland we have that support.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe software manufacturers are now looking to expand the range from cycling to include running, rowing and skiing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial is expected to conclude at the end of the
