films across college campuses. \u003cbr/\u003eThe entertainment groups are targeting users of a new type of online file-sharing application based on an advanced university computer network, known as Internet2.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Internet2 network, made up of some 200 colleges and universities and other affiliated organisations, is used to quickly swap academic data.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said it filed federal lawsuits on Wednesday against 405 students at 18 colleges in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eRIAA, the trade group for the largest recording industry labels, said it found evidence of more illegal activity at 140 more schools in 41 states and sent warning letters to university presidents.\u003cbr/\u003eInternet2 is used by several million university students, researchers and professionals around the world, but is generally inaccessible to the public.\u003cbr/\u003eRecording industry analysts said some students were illegally sharing as many as 13,600 music files - far more than most Internet users - and that the average number of songs offered illegally by the students was 2,300 each.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) said it also plans to sue an unspecified number of users of a file-sharing application called i2hub, which piggybacks onto the Internet2 network. \u003cbr/\u003eInternet2 isn't affiliated with i2hub, but some Internet2 users created i2hub, which is most commonly used along with Internet2 and also works on the Internet. \u003cbr/\u003eThe i2hub application swaps movies in less than five minutes and songs in less than 20 seconds.  \u003cbr/\u003eMPAA and RIAA officials said they've identified i2hub's creators, but the groups aren't taking legal action against them at this time. \u003cbr/\u003eInternet2 chief executive Doug Van Houweling says the service doesn't condone or support illegal file-sharing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Internet2 website notes that its more than 200 member universities are working to \"prevent and address illegal file sharing\".\u003cbr/\u003eVan Houweling notes that Internet2 and other service providers enjoy liability protection in the courts as long as the organisation can't be shown to be responsible for material flowing over the network.\u003cbr/\u003eBut University of Southern California (USC) law professor Dan Klerman says network providers are expected to deal with \"repeat infringers\" who use their services for illegal downloads.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Washington, the president of the Recording Industry Association of America says that regardless of which internet system one uses, the user isn't anonymous and can be found.\u003cbr/\u003eCary Sherman says the industry is suffering about a 20
