Legal experts said indictment would speed up the possibility of Jackson standing trial on the charges before 2005. In January, county prosecutors charged Jackson with seven counts of lewd or lascivious acts on a child under the age of 14, and two counts of administering an intoxicating agent, reportedly wine. Jackson pleaded not guilty to the charges. The authorities did not identify the alleged victim, but sources reported he was a now-teenage cancer patient who had appeared in a British documentary broadcast that showed Jackson talking about sleepovers with children at his Neverland estate. After the court appearance Jackson's staff handed out invitations to fans for a party back at Neverland that drew thousands of his supporters.
Santa Maria, California - 16 January 2004.
Mid shot, zoom in to close shot of Michael Jackson arriving at courthouse.
Santa Maria, California - 16 January 2004
Jackson going through metal detector and walking into courtroom
Santa Maria, California - 16 January 2004
Sketches Courtesy: Bill Robles
Various sketches of Michael Jackson and lawyers in courtroom -
Santa Maria, California - 16 January 2004.
Close shot of court document stating the charges against Michael Jackson
Extreme close shot of document
FILE: Santa Barbara, California - 20 November 2003
Close shot of Michael Jackson police mug shot.
US: World Trade Centre Memorial
A revised design for the World Trade Centre memorial was unveiled in January, including a subtle tribute to the rescue workers and an underground room where visitors would be able to see twisted steel beams, a crushed fire truck and other artefacts from the aftermath of the 11 September 2001 attacks. The winning design by architects Michael Arad and Peter Walker, named "Reflecting Absence," was chosen from eight finalists to remember the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks and 1993 bombing of the trade centre. More than 5000 submissions for the memorial were submitted from 63 countries. On Independence Day (4 July) a 20-tonne slab of granite, inscribed to honour "the enduring spirit of freedom," was laid at the Ground Zero site as the cornerstone of the skyscraper that will replace the destroyed towers. The hammer price on the 1905 painting was 93 (m) million US dollars, which was bumped up by more than 10 (m) million dollars in commission charges. The previous auction record was for Van Gogh's "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" which sold for 82.5 (m) million US dollars in 1990.
Fifty-eight works of impressionist and modern art were sold by Christies auction-house in October. Works by Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh attracted the heaviest bidding, and Monet's "Le Parlement, effet de soleil dans le brouillard", a painting of the British Houses of Parliament, pulled in the highest price of 18 (m) million US dollars.
In July, a Russian industrialist purchased the Forbes collection of Faberge art works, including nine rare Imperial Easter Eggs, for an undisclosed price. The Imperial Easter Eggs were made for the family of the Russia's czars in the late 1800s. The eggs and more than 180 other Faberge pieces from the Forbes collection were bought privately by Russian oil tycoon Victor Vekselberg through Sotheby's, which had planned to auction them on behalf of the family of publisher Malcolm Forbes. The rebellion had started weeks earlier in the north of the country, amid lingering unrest from the disputed elections in 2000, and flared into violence after Haiti celebrated 200 years of independence from France. After rebel forces took control of Cap-Haitien, Haiti's second largest city, France and the United States urged Aristide to quit for the good of the country and the beleaguered president boarded a plane for temporary exile in the Central African Republic. Gunfire crackled as the capital Port-au-Prince fell into chaos after his departure. Furious mobs of the president's supporters roamed the streets armed with old rifles, pistols, machetes and sticks, while anti-Aristide militants organised armed gangs that prowled in pickup trucks, searching for Aristide supporters. In rebel-held Cap-Haitien, a large crowd celebrated with rebel commander Louis-Jodel Chamblain, who had once been the head of a Haitian army death squad.
Three hours after Aristide's departure, Supreme Court Justice Boniface Alexandre declared he was taking over as called for by the Haitian constitution. The UN Security Council authorised the immediate deployment of 2600 peacekeeping troops from France, the US, Canada and several Caribbean nations - the Pentagon announced that vanguard of US Marines had already started to deploy in Haiti.
In March, Aristide moved to live in Jamaica, angering Haiti's new US-backed interim government, led by caretaker prime minister Gerard Latortue, which worried that his presence in the region would further destabilise Haiti. In May, Aristide left Jamaica for South Africa, where he plans to live in exile until he can safely return to Haiti. Before leaving, he insisted he was still the elected president of Haiti and promised to return. Aristide has said he was ousted from power by a US-sponsored plot, a claim Washington denies.
Cap-Haitien, Haiti - 22 February 2004
Wide shot of rebel soldiers walking down street and shooting
Firing from upstairs window at radio station
Soldiers firing back
Soldier fires into lock of door again to open it
Close up soldier firing as he crouches down
Port-au-Prince, Haiti - 29 February 2004
Looters running as police approaches
Man running carrying a box on his back
Policeman taking cover aiming his gun to looters
Police hitting looters while he points his gun at them
Car arriving at crime scene
Cap Haitien, Haiti - 29 February 2004
Rebel commander Louis-Jodel Chamblain (on right) on top of a jeep celebrating with crowds
Wide shot of procession through streets of Cap-Haitien, led by Chamblain sitting on top of jeep
Johannesburg, South Africa - 31 May 2004
Ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in doorway of plane
Port au Prince, Haiti - 12 March 2004
Haitian Prime Minister Gerard Latortue and interim Haitian president Boniface Alexandre shake hands
Americas: Mexico Protest
Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans dressed in white staged a silent march through the heart of Mexico City in June to protest against a spate of kidnappings and violent crimes across the country. The march was the largest in Mexico in recent history. The protesters shared stories of how almost everyone seemed to have been a victim of violent crime, and blamed Mexico's law enforcement agencies for failing to protect its citizens. Mexico has suffered a blight of kidnappings, more than 500 every year, although the government says the number of incidents is falling. But the families of some victims have been fearful of reporting kidnappings to Mexico's notoriously corrupt police force - some of whose officers have been found to be involved in kidnapping plots.
Mexico City - 27 June 2004
Various aerial shots of crowds marching through Paseo de la Reforma in downtown Mexico City
Banners showing photographs of kidnapped or missing people
Banners of a man killed after being kidnapped
Father and child chanting, UPSOUND (Spanish) "Not one more. The boy, Iruan Ergui Wu, was at the centre of an international custody battle that dragged on for nearly three years. Iruan, who had a Taiwanese father and a Brazilian mother, was supposed to be handed over to authorities at a regional courthouse. But his uncle had refused to give him up, and after six hours of delays, police entered the house and seized the boy. Iruan became a celebrity in Taiwan after his father, a fishing boat captain, died in March 2001, just days after bringing his son to Taiwan. His Brazilian mother had died of leukaemia when he was three, and his uncle, Wu Huo-yen, said his brother had wanted him to care for the boy. Iruan's 48-year-old maternal grandmother had cared for the boy for three years in Porto Alegre in southern Brazil.
