Close-up Chairman Senator Arlen Specter gavelling session to close, pan view to protesters standing up and making statements\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Senate's Judiciary Committee examined a provision in the tentative agreement between the White House and some Republicans on Capitol Hill on how to treat terror detainees.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt the centre of the hearing was the writ of habeas corpus, the protection against arbitrary detention.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly three Senators took part in the early Monday morning hearing, which was repeatedly interrupted by human rights protesters.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the protesters remained largely silent, on a number of occasions they stood up turning around showing slogans written on their bright pink shirts.\u003cbr/\u003eSenate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter told the hearing he was troubled with the provision removing habeas corpus - that would allow the Pentagon to decide which detainees would get lawyers and a day in court.\u003cbr/\u003eA number of witnesses before the panel expressed concerns about the proposed formula for treating detainees.\u003cbr/\u003eRetired Rear Admiral John D. Hutson, told the Senators that, \"without those kinds of protections we are just another banana republic if we let these things go.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut Texas Senator John Cornyn did not see a problem with the removing of habeas from the rules governing treatment of detainees.\u003cbr/\u003eThomas Sullivan, an attorney whose firm is representing seven Saudi detainees still in Guantanamo, decried the lack of debate over what he called \"a momentous moment in our history\".\u003cbr/\u003eSullivan said he believed that if the current bill was to pass, \"after I am dead and the members of this Senate hearing are dead an apology will be made - just as we did for the incarceration of the Japanese citizens in the Second World War.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eCongressional experts expect the detainee
