Wide Soweto residents walking across street from mural wall UPSOUND: Guitar\u003cbr/\u003eA group of South African designers have launched a special art project called the 'Mandela Poster Project,' which they hope will show how the world views the iconic figure Nelson Mandela - through the medium of graphic design.\u003cbr/\u003eThey put out a call for poster designs - hoping to gather 95 posters, one for every year of Madiba's life - to honour the \"father of the nation\" and raise money for his dream: a children's hospital in Johannesburg.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"He's a living legend. Apart from being a living legend, I think he lives the spirit of Ubuntu, as we say in Africa. He carries across this concept of humanity and selflessness. And I think that has been the glue that has held this entire project together for us,\" said Mohammed Jogie, one of the founders of the project.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe organizers were quite overwhelmed by the response to their project. \u003cbr/\u003eOver 60 days, designers from more than 70 countries submitted 700 designs.   \u003cbr/\u003eJogie says the poster format lends itself to creativity and impact.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think posters, they're graphic, they catch a person's attention in a short space of time. And the kind of also carry the soul of the artist, of the designer, and that kind of comes through and comes forth in the work as well,\" said Jogie. \u003cbr/\u003eThey've had to whittle the enormous number of submissions down to just 95.  \u003cbr/\u003eGraphic designer Melissa Maritz, who is based in Pretoria, sent in a few different designs.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"I would definitely have to say this one would be my favorite.\" she said as she held aloft one of her creations.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a very simple, clean idea. It's, as you can see, the, five simple circles with numbers, representing 46664,\" said Maritz.  \u003cbr/\u003e46664 is the prison number held by Mandela from his imprisonment in 1964 to his release in 1990.\u003cbr/\u003eMaritz said she wanted to honor the man who fought for South Africa's freedom by interpreting his story and image in a new way. \u003cbr/\u003eMaritz's various submissions form part of a vast body of donated work which the project team has had to choose from.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe final 95 posters will be printed in a single special edition and launched on the eve of Mandela's birthday on Thursday, before being auctioned off by the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital Trust.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnother set of posters will crisscross the globe as part of a travelling exhibition celebrating different parts of the life and service of the elder statesman. \u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere, a young South African graffiti artist is using his skills to create artwork capturing the image of Nelson Mandela that he believes can spread the iconic leader's message of peace, love and forgiveness.\u003cbr/\u003eThe work by artist Nkululeka Mahlangu is displayed on a plaster wall outside Soweto's Regina Mundi Church.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mural stretches down Mkhize Street, showing the history of Mandela, as president, as a statesman, as a young man.\u003cbr/\u003eIt also depicts other iconic figures.\u003cbr/\u003eMahlangu said that since the \"father of the nation\" was hospitalized over a month ago, demand for his image has soared.   \u003cbr/\u003eHe believes his artwork is a form of public service.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"We had to do this mural. Because one, it's in front of our community. That means the tourists will come here, not only that they are our primary or secondary focus. Ours is for the community to get the message,\" said Mahlangu.\u003cbr/\u003eHe uses stencils and black spray paint, on anything flat and recycled. \u003cbr/\u003eAs Mandela's 95th birthday approaches, Mahlangu says he plans to continue as usual, believing \"I be here, working forever. I believe that Mandela Day should be not dedicated, should not be a one day event. We should celebrate his life each day as we live, you know, to bring change, you know.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he hopes his body of work will inspire a younger generation to respect their heritage and give back to their communities.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"If we celebrated Mandela birthday, let it not be a month, or a day, or those 27 or 67 minutes. We should be wholly, you know, dedicate ourselves and we continue where he left off, we pick up, where he left off,\" said Mahlangu. \u003cbr/\u003eWith Soweto's youth searching for their own identity, art and music have helped form a creative expression in this township.  \u003cbr/\u003eMahlangu says he hopes, in their quest to define their future, the youth of today don't forget their past - and the great men who helped shape their future.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the nation prepares itself for Mandela's birthday, they are praying too - that he will recover - after spending more than a
