Mid shot of bull in water\u003cbr/\u003eNo one is absolutely certain how the Asian buffalo arrived on the Brazilian island of Maraj�, but they've become a vital cottage industry.\u003cbr/\u003eThe island's new Mayor has increased their role, substituting them for rubbish trucks.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one move he's increased employment, cut costs and local people say it's a better service.\u003cbr/\u003eMaraj� is believed to be the largest fluvial (river made)  island in the world and transportation around it isn't easy.\u003cbr/\u003eBased at at the delta of the Amazon River, it has forty thousand square kilometres of mostly uninhabited forests, swamps, mangroves and beaches and is the same size as Switzerland or Denmark.\u003cbr/\u003eAcross the largely uninhabited landscape you can see the natives including species of cranes and waterfowl, but the buffalo are a more unlikely and unexpected presence.\u003cbr/\u003eNo one here knows for sure how they arrived in the Amazon or even how many there are, although estimates range between sixty and two hundred thousand in Maraj� alone. \u003cbr/\u003eIslanders claim the animals presence is the result of a dramatic shipwreck in the late 1800s, when Asian buffalo from Indochina on their way to French Guyana survived by swimming to Marajo's shore.\u003cbr/\u003eThe environment suited them, they multiplied and soon locals realised that if they were tamed, they would provide an excellent method of transportation on the island's difficult terrain. \u003cbr/\u003eNow there are four different breeds of buffalo here and their meat, milk and the cheese it makes is very popular.\u003cbr/\u003eThese buffalo differ from their ferocious African counterparts. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the island's greatest bufffalo enthusiasts is Tonga, who is the Mayor of Soure, the capital town as well as a farmer with a three hundred strong herd of his own. \u003cbr/\u003eAs soon as he took office he substituted rubbish trucks with buffalo drawn carts and he has good practical reasons for doing so. The buffalos can reach places many cars and trucks cannot go, this is especially \u003cbr/\u003etrue in the rainy season when daily tropical showers produce enormous quantities of mud. \u003cbr/\u003eTonga says the buffalo are more cost effective than trucks and require no maintenance. \u003cbr/\u003eEach morning forty drivers and their carts cross the town's streets collecting residential rubbish and taking it to the local dump. They own their own animals as well as the carts and they've organised themselves \u003cbr/\u003einto a successful cooperative, charging a weekly fee for their services.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe future of the rubbish collectors isn't absolutely certain as Mayor Tonga is giving up his official duties after the next election, to concentrate on producing and marketing his own cheese which he claims is \u003cbr/\u003ehealthier because it has less cholesterol than other varieties. \u003cbr/\u003eA similar program is also being operated by the local police chief for his service. Crime in this community of twenty thousand people is happily almost non-existent and so far only a couple of buffalo are used to \u003cbr/\u003epatrol the quiet streets.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the buffalo are still a growing source of income for both rich and poor islanders who have become fond, as well as reliant on their animals. They have become so tame they are allowed to wander freely, the \u003cbr/\u003ebuffalo are even allowed to intrude on the serious business of football. \u003cbr/\u003eLike many people here, Luis Pacheco owns a single buffalo. He makes a living carrying bricks, sand and cement to construction sites..\u003cbr/\u003eLocal \"vaqueiros\" or cowboys have to move around the island's swampy fields.also prefer buffalo to horses.  \u003cbr/\u003eNow the reputation of the Maraj� buffalo is spreading. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Brazilian army is evaluating their use as a method of cheap and easy transport in inaccessible areas all over
