terminal decline. \u003cbr/\u003eCinemas are closing, and owners say the only thing that can save them is the lifting of a 40-year-old ban on showing movies made in India, Pakistan's enemy in three wars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lahore-based movie business, known as Lollywood, similar to its Bollywood cousin in Bombay, India, has suffered both from booming sales of pirated movies on video and DVD and from the recent spread of cable TV channels showing Bollywood blockbusters.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly about 25 mainstream movies were made last year, and most were not financially successful. \u003cbr/\u003eAs recently as 1989, there were 101 Pakistani movies produced in that year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe aging Evernew movie studio is now being converted to cater for television productions, to capitalise on making drama serials for the growing number of private TV networks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Evernew Studio is little changed since it was built in the mid-1950s, and many of its skilled staff have been working there for 30 years or more.\u003cbr/\u003eMadame Sangeeta, is a director has recently finished filming the movie 'Gulabo' at Evernew. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that the Pakistan film industry needs better equipment. \u003cbr/\u003eDwindling cinema revenues mean the films that do make it to the big screen are usually cheap productions that can only attract audiences with lots of blood-spilling and sexual innuendo, the latter tame by Hollywood standards.\u003cbr/\u003eLollywood moviemaking dates back to before the partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan after independence from Britain in 1947.\u003cbr/\u003eThe business was helped for many years by the ban imposed on Indian films in the early 1960s, shortly before the two countries fought their second war. \u003cbr/\u003eIndian movies, with few exceptions, have been banned from Pakistani cinemas for the past 40 years. \u003cbr/\u003ePakistani movie stars attending a recent seminar on the country's movie industry appealed for government support  to revive the once-thriving local film industry from near-terminal decline.\u003cbr/\u003eActors, producers and directors from across Pakistan gathered for a two-day seminar in February. \u003cbr/\u003eParticipants appealed for tax breaks and cash awards for top movies to encourage excellence and for the easing of censorship restrictions.\u003cbr/\u003eShaan, is Pakistan's top leading man, a New York-educated filmmaker and actor involved in some 300 movies in a 15-year career. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says Pakistanis should be free to express themselves through cinema, and said it could play a key role in promoting a more tolerant society and promoting a more positive image for the country abroad. \u003cbr/\u003eSalim Gul Shaik, is Pakistan's culture secretary. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the proposals being put forward to help the industry are positive. \u003cbr/\u003eBut there is still no government decision on whether the ban of Indian films will be lifted. \u003cbr/\u003eTheatre owners now say they need to show Indian movies because not enough films are being made at home.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Action Committee of Cinema Owners, said only about 270 theatres remain in Pakistan, down from more than 1,500 during the heyday of Pakistani films.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Punjab, one of four provinces in Pakistan, 130 cinemas have shut since 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eRegardless of the ban, Bollywood is already part of the fabric of Pakistan's movie industry. \u003cbr/\u003eTop Pakistani productions often use Indian singers, music arrangers, choreographers, editors and even dancers.\u003cbr/\u003eThis cinema in Lahore has seen better days. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it retains some hardcore fans. \u003cbr/\u003eAmjid Bhatti says that he this is his fourth viewing of the Pakistani made film  'Majajan' today. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the cinema's owner Arif Khan is pessimistic about the future of the Pakistan film industry and says that co-production with India should be encouraged. \u003cbr/\u003eMost people these days prefer to stay home to watch CD copies of glitzy Bollywood films. \u003cbr/\u003eBollywood's glamorous actors have superstar status both at home and increasingly abroad. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian industry's most popular couple,  Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, married at the weekend in what was dubbed  the \"wedding of the century\" by the Indian media. \u003cbr/\u003eBack in Pakistan on the 'Gulabo' film set at Evernew, Madame Sangeeta, says that television can not compete with the magic of cinema. \u003cbr/\u003e'Gulabo'  is now in post production and should be out by Autumn, 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eIts is hoped it will be as successful as 'Majajan', directed by Syed Noor.
