I hate to see it, I hate to see America pictured abroad as still a bunch of frontier, gun slinging, not quite grownup kids, you know.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Richard Snyder, Committee for the Silent \u003cbr/\u003eThe stories told at the demonstration have become all too familiar to Americans.\u003cbr/\u003eJason May was thirteen years old when he was killed by a friend who was playing with a gun.\u003cbr/\u003eThe friend thought the gun was empty, but there was a bullet remaining in the chamber that discharged, killing Jason.\u003cbr/\u003eHis mother was present at the demonstration, ten years after Jason was killed.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I will tell you how hard it is, as a parent or someone who has lost someone, to come out and deal with some of this.  It's real hard.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Patty May, Son murdered by a handgun\u003cbr/\u003eThe Committee for the Silent is not for a total ban on guns in the United States, but asks that gun manufacturers become more responsible in providing safety features on weapons.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Committee asks that gun makers put trigger locks, personalised activation devices and other features on guns to make it impossible for a child to fire the weapon without adult supervision.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, gun violence doesn't just stop once the trigger is pulled.\u003cbr/\u003eGun violence can become a vicious cycle, growing as a vicious circle that captures entire families and neighborhoods. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have many opportunities in which to intervene and to provide resources and services for victims of gun violence.  And, if we don't intervene, the cycle will enlarge.  Those same victims sometimes become perpetrators and sometimes start carrying guns for fear of the violence that's in their lives.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Dr. John May, Emergency Room Physician, DC Jail\u003cbr/\u003eIronically, a recent study reported that it's 43 times more likely for a handgun kept in the home to be used against its owner, a family member or friend than it is to be used against an intruder.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Committee for the Silent, toy guns and teddy bears are more regulated than American-made hand guns.  \u003cbr/\u003eSurvivors of handgun violence also attended the demonstration in suburban Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eOne demonstrator was shot while walking on a street in New Orleans when he was assaulted at gunpoint.\u003cbr/\u003eHe calls his wound his \"22-tattoo\" because the robber used a cheap, 22 caliber handgun. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"Things have to change.
