Various exteriors of flooded streets\u003cbr/\u003eAs thousands of rescue workers and volunteers rushed to New Orleans to evacuate city residents, people in surrounding neighbourhoods were forced to pick up the pieces from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina by themselves. \u003cbr/\u003eRescue workers arrived to St. Bernard Parish, east of New Orleans, six days after putrid flood waters swamped homes and left cars, boats and even planes as lawn decorations.\u003cbr/\u003eSt. Bernard Fire Chief Thomas Stone said the neighbourhood was \"devastated.\" \u003cbr/\u003eKatrina's swift winds and sudden surge of high water trapped many residents on the second stories of roof tops, and left them scrounging for food and water for almost a week. \u003cbr/\u003eThose who did escape were forced to axe their way out of their homes and walk several miles to reach neighbouring cities. \u003cbr/\u003eBurley Watson, whose house was completely destroyed, tied his last remaining personal affects to his bike as he prepared to ride to Slidell to meet his mother. \u003cbr/\u003eWatson said as he fought back tears hidden behind large black sun glasses: \"I lost everything and when I say everything I mean everything.\" \u003cbr/\u003eMany of Watson's friends and neighbours shared the same sentiment, as their homes were left completely bare. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Watson did not see any bodies, many other evacuees said the dead were taken to evacuation centres and prisons. \u003cbr/\u003eSt. Bernard Parish authorities reported that they have one-hundred bodies, but believe they will have many more once the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team reports the official body count. \u003cbr/\u003eSheriff Jack Stephens said the government should not forget the residents of St. Bernard.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said: \"We need the United States government not to forget us and not to be spending ten tons of money in Indonesia and forget about the people in the lower Mississippi River Valley.\"\u003cbr/\u003eState and federal officials are all facing public criticism for a slow response to the crisis. \u003cbr/\u003eUS President George W.
