Wide of beach of Almeria\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Spain goes to the polls on Sunday to choose a new government, one thing will be high on voters' minds: the country's soaring unemployment rate.\u003cbr/\u003eSpain's moribund economy, the eurozone's fourth-largest, and rising borrowing costs have dominated the election\u003cbr/\u003ecampaign. \u003cbr/\u003eIn particular, there are worries the country, which has an unemployment rate of 21.5 percent _ more than 45 percent of which are people under the age of 25 _ is getting dragged further into Europe's debt crisis mire.\u003cbr/\u003eAlmeria, located in the south of Spain, is a small region with 700-thousand inhabitants. \u003cbr/\u003eSome 75-thousand are currently unemployed.\u003cbr/\u003eAltogether the region posts an unemployment rate of 36 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eBut perhaps a  more damning figure is its youth unemployment, which stands at a staggering 51 percent - the highest in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eUnderstandably young people in Almeria are worried about their future. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to the housing bubble, which largely fuelled the economy, that went bust three years ago, two of the region's most important sectors, tourism and agriculture are also struggling in the effects of Spain's financial crisis.\u003cbr/\u003e29-year-old David Munoz has a story that has become typical in the region. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has finished two degrees, one of them a masters, studied abroad with a Fulbright postgraduate scholarship and worked as a teacher in Germany and the UK. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter teaching in Spain for four years he was fired four months ago. \u003cbr/\u003eHe is married, has a one month old baby and his wife is also unemployed. \u003cbr/\u003eHis unemployment benefit consists of 750 euros (1015 US dollars) per month but the couple also have to pay a mortgage of 608 euros (823 US dollars) monthly. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery day he looks for a job and despite his education and experience, he knows he will probably end up working in a bar or a hotel. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are both highly qualified with degrees and training, we are young and eager to work but we are not receiving any help,\" he said of he and his wife's situation. \u003cbr/\u003e\"You don't expect this to happen but when it does your world collapses around you.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWith a crucial general election coming up on Sunday, Almeria residents hope that a new government can bring about change.\u003cbr/\u003eMany, like David, though fear it won't.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"You must never lose hope but with this government, or a different one, Spain is going to implode,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the economy sidetracking their dreams, many young people like 18 year-old Sociology student Maria del Mar Martinez are thinking of finding work elsewhere, even abroad.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think I may have to leave perhaps go to London,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe increasing pressure on Spain's public finances is forming the backdrop to this Sunday's general election, at which the opposition conservatives are widely predicted to score a landslide win.\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite election promises of a better future and more job opportunities, Antonio Segura, an expert in labour law, is worried that young people are simply losing faith in politicians, no matter their colour.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The message is efficient sociologically and politically but they never give solutions. They don't seem to reach out to the general population nor young people,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003ePoliticians are also failing to convince young business owners like Antonio Lamarca, struggling to provide employment and keep his business open in Spain's tough economic conditions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe restaurant owner's main complaint is the difficulties he faces when hiring new employees because of expenses with social security.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I spend 70-thousand euros (95 thousand US dollars) monthly in wages plus I pay 35-thousand euros (47 thousand US dollars) for social security. I would provide a better service.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLamarca hopes the beginning of the end to the crisis will come with a new government but he is aware of the monumental task ahead.\u003cbr/\u003eThe conservatives led by Mariano Rajoy, largely expected to win Sunday's elections, will have to grapple with a stagnant economy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country's key borrowing rate in the markets eased on Wednesday following a couple days of big gains. \u003cbr/\u003eThe yield on Spain's ten-year bond eased 0.12 percentage point to 6.18 percent but edged back up toward 6.30 percent by early\u003cbr/\u003eafternoon. \u003cbr/\u003eA rate of 7 percent is considered unsustainable in the long-term. \u003cbr/\u003eWeak growth prospects have been cited by the three top international credit ratings agencies for their recent downgrades of Spain's sovereign debt.\u003cbr/\u003eRajoy faces the dilemma of trying to lower Spain's budget deficit - and thus boost investor confidence to reduce Spain's borrowing costs - without cutting spending or raising taxes so much that it puts a brake on the already listless economy and drags it into another
