Various Burmese soldiers on patrol in Shan State.\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eBurma is launching a campaign to increase the numbers of tourists visiting its country by tenfold.\u003cbr/\u003eBut government's opponents say the military regime has an appalling record of human rights abuses and any foreign currency brought in will only help support these atrocities.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth sides are now locked in a battle to win the hearts and minds of the tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eRangoon, which was renamed Yangon by Burma's military junta, is regarded as one of the most beautiful capital cities in South East Asia.\u003cbr/\u003ePagodas dominate the skyline and tourists are looked upon with curiosity by the residents.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year 60,000 foreigners visited Burma-  renamed Myanmar.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the government is hoping to lure ten times that number- half a million- people to the country with the launch of its campaign- 'Visit Myanmar 96'.\u003cbr/\u003e\" Very frankly speaking, we are not rich. Though we may be rich in our natural resources, but in monetary area- we are not rich yet. A wire fence is meant to discourage the taking of pictures of the now redundant parliamentary buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the 1990 elections the military refused to allow the winning party, National League for Democracy (NLD), to take power.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The leader of that party, Aung San Suu Kyi, was placed under house arrest. It's now 1995 and the military is still in control. Those that have been elected have either been imprisoned, killed or have fled to the ethnic areas to join in the struggle against the military dictatorship. So the first thing we want to say is that by going to Burma and taking your foreign exchange in there you are, in a sense, assisting to legitimise this illegal and barbaric regime that is killing people on a daily basis.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Faith Doherty, Boycott Burma Campaign.\u003cbr/\u003eCampaigners at this meeting in Bangkok, are now lobbying businessmen and tourists to keep away from Burma.\u003cbr/\u003eA U.N report outlining abuses such as torture and summary executions gives weight to their arguments.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the numbers are against them.\u003cbr/\u003e So far investors from all over Asia have pumped 700 million (m) dollars (US) into the growing tourist industry. \u003cbr/\u003eWhilst the hotels are under construction, the government struggles to create an infrastructure which will hasten the economic push forward.\u003cbr/\u003eCritics claim that the government is using forced labour to build the roads and operate the transport network.\u003cbr/\u003eThe authorities admit that unpaid labour exists -  but they say that people work for nothing because their culture encourages them to serve their community in this way.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for opponents of the tourism drive, one of the biggest problems they face is that tourists visiting Burma, or Myanmar, like what they see.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In comparison to Bangkok its so much silence here... people are much more friendly.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Tourist\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think Myanmar is one of the more enjoyable countries in the world.
