Most of the jewellery comes from the Cartier Collection, but there are also items on loan from public institutions and private collections including the Prince of Monaco and the UK's Queen Elizabeth II.
Louis-Francois Cartier founded Cartier Jewellery in Paris in 1847. It remained a family business until 1964 and is now owned by Compagnie Financire Richemont.
King Edward VII of England was the first to refer to Cartier as "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers". For his coronation in 1902, the monarch famously ordered 27 tiaras.
Laurent Salome, co-commissioner of the exhibition says: "A piece of jewellery can be perfectly boring even if it has the most beautiful stones in the world. What we can see here is the fact you have big diamonds or the prettiest pearls is not enough, you have to know how to put a soul in them. I think that is what is fascinating in this company."
Cartier's fame has been shaped by the scores of celebrities that have worn and still wear its creations. Elizabeth Taylor, Wallis Simpson, Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Barbara Hutton and Marlene Dietrich are just a few.
And royalty simply adores Cartier. Over the years, the courts of England, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Siam, Greece, Serbia, Belgium, Romania, Egypt, Albania, Monaco and the House of Orleans have all issued royal warrants.
( Note: The tiara worn by Her Royal Highness Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge for her wedding with Prince William was made in 1936 and purchased by the Duke of York (later King George VI) for his wife Elizabeth. The tiara is part of the Royal Collection on loan from Buckingham Palace).
Salome says: "We had some very prestigious personalities who accepted to lend us some of their treasures. The Queen of England was particularly generous because she lent us one of her favourite brooches, a truly magical object with a famous diamond, a pink diamond, the Williamson. This unprecedented collection is unique, there's never been a bigger exhibition on this subject."
The exhibition also pays tribute to the Cartier's craftsmanship by exhibiting a collection of mystery clocks and imposing pieces such as the bib necklace made for Bhupindar Singh, maharaja of Patiala.
The pieces have been arranged into historical context showing the strong bonds Cartier had with evolutions in society as well as with artistic movements such as art deco.
Salome says: "We can see there's a fascination for India, for China, we can feel that society was becoming cosmopolitan, we also feel the evolution in fashion, the liberation of women. The dresses show too how jewels had to be adapted for a liberated woman who doesn't wear corsages anymore, who doesn't live the same life anymore. It is a woman who has the right to smoke and to wear make-up even if it is still exceptional at the beginning. We can see here that Cartier followed this evolution closely."
According to Stanislas de Quercize, Cartier President and CEO, each Cartier piece is a work of art in its own right:
"You say 'It's Cartier' like you say 'it's Picasso', you can recognise it from far away. This style is at the same time universal, so it appeals to you whatever the continent you live on, whatever the colour of your passport is, and it's also timelessness."
The golden age of Cartier is often thought of as ending in 1940's after the death of the jeweller in 1942. But according to de Quercize the golden age is now:
"Today, it's the golden age of high jewellery. We have never created so many high jewellery creations with such a talent. Why? Because high jewellery is a question of experience.
