(Aug. 4)\u003cbr/\u003eThis meat packaging plant in Springdale, Arkansas could be responsible for a nationwide outbreak of salmonella that''s killed one person and sickened 77 others. \u003cbr/\u003eMeat giant Cargill announced Wednesday it''s recalling 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen ground turkey packaged here from February through early August this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Agriculture Department and CDC says it''s one of the largest meat recalls ever, spawned from a dangerous strain of salmonella that''s resistant to some common antibiotics.\u003cbr/\u003e((DR. CHRISTOPHER BRADEN/CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL -- audio only from teleconference))\u003cbr/\u003e\"Investigators, found information on ground turkey purchases both the brand and where people bought the ground turkey from three patients who had become ill with this outbreak strain.  Investiagors used shopper card information to trace back these samples to the Cargill plant in Arkansas.\"))\u003cbr/\u003eCargill says the recalled ground turkey is sold under multiple brand names including Honeysuckle White and grocery store labels like Safeway and Kroger.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe company says some of the affected turkey isn''t labeled at all and is shipped directly to food service facilities.\u003cbr/\u003e((MARK KLEIN, CARGILL SPOKESMAN: \"Obviously, something was not going correctly, but again, that''s why we''re doing the recall, that''s why we shut down the ground turkey production, and we''re going to get those answers to take corrective action.\"))\u003cbr/\u003eKlein says the company is breaking down and sanitizing equipment in Springdale and will work with additional federal food safety inspectors to help determine the source of the contamination.\u003cbr/\u003e26 states have reported salmonella cases since March. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We don''t have really aggressive policies in place making sure that meatpackers don''t ship out things that are contaminated.
