Wide of Aung in interview \u003cbr/\u003eMyanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi declined to comment on Tuesday  on the European Union''s decision to suspend sanctions against the country as a reward for carrying out political reforms. \u003cbr/\u003eSuu Kyi previously endorsed the EU move during a visit by British Prime Minister David Cameron to Yangon this month.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, some exiled activists say that the government''s reforms have yet to improve the lives of most citizens and human rights abuses continue. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say foreign investment before rule of law is established in the impoverished country would do more harm than good and benefit only the military and its cronies who dominate the most lucrative sectors of the economy, such as timber, gemstones, oil and gas. \u003cbr/\u003eSoe Aung, of the Thailand-based Forum for Democracy in Burma, said the EU''s decision to suspend sanctions for a year was \"totally opposite to the EU own standard, which is to uphold the human rights and good governance.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"With the governance existing in Burma, there is a lot of corruption and more human rights violations will be brought by these investments,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Forum for Democracy in Burma is an umbrella group of exiled activists and organisations who want democracy in Myanmar and an end to the military''s dominance of politics. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile the influence of Myanmar activists - who escaped the country in the years following a 1988 crackdown on democracy protesters is waning as the country opens up, they remain players in the debate. \u003cbr/\u003eLast week, a group of them were lobbying opinion-makers in Washington, including at the State Department and the World Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Obama administration has taken those concerns on board. While the US has led the charge in engaging Myanmar, it is moving more slowly than the EU in lifting sanctions.\u003cbr/\u003eAung said that increased foreign investment in ethnic minority areas could lead to more people being internally displaced.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the country''s resources are in, and need to be transported through, remote, ethnic minority regions where hundreds of thousands of villagers have been displaced by fighting and where military abuses have been worst.\u003cbr/\u003eWestern governments maintain it''s important to act now to reward the Thein Sein government, to weaken the hand of conservatives in the military who oppose the democratic reforms.\u003cbr/\u003eThe EU''s announcement came on the same day that Suu Kyi and other members of her National League for Democracy (NLD) refused to take its new seats in the parliament because part of the oath of office pledges to \"safeguard\" the constitution - which they want to change.\u003cbr/\u003eAung said that this was the \"right move\" by the NLD. \u003cbr/\u003eThe EU on Monday announced it was suspending most of its sanctions, except an arms embargo, for six months to a year while it assesses the country''s progress. \u003cbr/\u003eThe restrictions currently target more than 800 companies and nearly 500 people. \u003cbr/\u003eLast week, Japan said it would take steps to write off about 3.7 (b)
