Various shots of snakes\u003cbr/\u003eA self-styled homeopathic doctor in Afghanistan is claiming to have found cures for a number of ailments by using snake and scorpion venom.\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of patients suffering from seizures and skin disorders flock to his clinic that's crawling with creatures.\u003cbr/\u003eMohammad Sherzad mixes venom with natural herbs to treat people ill with epilepsy and vitiligo, which causes white, depigmented patches on the skin. \u003cbr/\u003eRemoving poison from a snake or scorpion is delicate, if not hazardous work, but having done it for more than three decades Sherzad has developed a fondness for his creatures. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I feel very happy because they (the snakes and scorpions) are my friends. I love them and that is the reason why I look after them. We use the poison of snakes and scorpions to make medicine for the vitiligo disease and other skin related diseases.\"\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eSherzad lays a snake across his lap and squeezes venom from its mouth. \u003cbr/\u003eHe uses a syringe to extract poison from the tips of his scorpions' tails, which curve over their backs. \u003cbr/\u003eHe then processes the venom, purifies it to remove harmful substances, and then mixes it with herbs found in the mountains.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough he is completely self taught and has no formal medical training Sherzad says that one day he hopes to share his knowledge with others. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I hope that I can hold an exhibition with the help of government to show to the world how poison can be used as medicine, so others will be able to use it as well.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMore then 1,800 patients are registered at Sherzad's home clinic. \u003cbr/\u003eToday Dil Agha, who suffers from vitiligo, has come to join the queue of patients. \u003cbr/\u003e \"I was told that my disease has no treatment, then I heard about this place and I decided to come for treatment.\"\u003cbr/\u003ehe says.\u003cbr/\u003eSherzad proudly shows visitors an album of before and after photos of his patients. \u003cbr/\u003eOne shows a man with white patches all over his arms and legs. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother, taken later, shows the man with much of his skin colour having returned to normal.\u003cbr/\u003eSherzad examines his patients in a small clinic in his home in Charakar, the capital of Parwan province. \u003cbr/\u003ePatients, who pay an initial fee of about $10, are greeted by a glass case of snakes and a covered glass dish of scorpions that sits on a table. \u003cbr/\u003eThe patients leave with different capsules, powders and other forms of his homeopathic medicines that cost roughly $20 to $30 a month, depending on the patient's age and condition.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I thank God today that this disease (vitiligo) can be cured in Afghanistan. And we can say to the world that we are now able to treat this disease.\" Sherzad says. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever not everyone is convinced. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Qasim Sayedi, who directs the health department in Parwan province, says the Afghan government currently does not regulate homeopathic doctors, but does exert some informal oversight. \u003cbr/\u003eThe local health department once asked Sherzad, an Afghan returnee from Iran, to provide documents of his education.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He had no documents except some video and photos from Iran, that showed him with snakes and scorpions,\" says Sayedi, who is sceptical that Sherzad's treatments really work. \u003cbr/\u003eSherzad says his patients' experiences are evidence of his
