And then it's the turn of the animals.\u003cbr/\u003eA bear is made to dance and ride a scooter while a sorry looking walrus \"Sultan\" performs its routine.\u003cbr/\u003eWalrus trainer Seghiy Svishenko says he loves working with the walrus.\u003cbr/\u003eBut while Svishenko is obviously devoted to \" ultan\", the walrus does not look well.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Its better to work with animals. We do some preparations first and then when the performance is ready I'm so happy.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAnimal circuses are banned in much of Europe but still exist in Ukraine.\u003cbr/\u003eAnimal rights activist Volodymyr Boreiko syas there are real concerns about how the animal acts are treated.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is true that animals in our circuses are not kept in very good conditions. Nobody controls them. Old animals are destroyed. The Veterinary service is weak. But the most important thing is the training. Its aim is to break the animal.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eBoreiko also says many people in the Ukraine accept the circuses treatment of animals.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring Soviet times, like the ballet, the circus was considered the Soviet Union's visiting card and the state poured a lot of resources into developing the circus art. \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of big cities and even small towns across the Soviet Union had so-called circus studios where children could master the art from a young age. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now government funding for circuses is scare and the colonnaded circus building in the centre of Kiev, a pride of the Ukrainian capital constructed in the 1960s, desperately needs to be renovated - the artists' toilets smell of urine and the audience hall smells of animals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country's Culture Ministry said in a written statement to the AP that the number of circus shows performed today is lower than in Soviet Ukraine because the of the viewers' economic hardships and the abundance of shopping malls and other entertainment opportunities that compete with the circus. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government says it is doing what it can to support the Ukrainian circus during a recession by sponsoring circus contests and developing government programs that would provide financial and social support to circus artists. \u003cbr/\u003eBut despite all the troubles the circuses now face, students at the Circus Art Faculty of the Kiev Municipal Circus Academy Stepan Melnyk says he loves learning to perform.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Circus art brings me happiness and joy - lots of emotions, lots of trainings. I wish to achieve more and more. I can say that I'm studying not just at the best circus academy in Ukraine but also with the world's best teachers.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe Soviet Union was home to over 60 permanent and dozens of tent circuses and the shows were such high quality that the circus attracted not just children, but also an adult audience. \u003cbr/\u003eSoviet circus artists toured the world earning lucrative honorariums for the state, won international contests and earned the love of foreign audiences. \u003cbr/\u003eAt home, circus artists enjoyed not only a sense of prestige, but also strong government support, such as free or subsided apartments and discounts for hard-to-get consumer goods like cars or electric home appliances. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of that glory ended when the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1991, leaving ex-Soviet republics, including Ukraine, in political chaos and economic ruin.\u003cbr/\u003eWith even meagre salaries paid late, hundreds of Ukrainian circus artists fled abroad to work at European tent circuses and the prestigious Canadian Cirque du Soleil. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of the domestic circuses were forced to rent out their premises for dog fights, beauty pageants and hair dressing shows.\u003cbr/\u003eOne trainer at National Ukrainian Circus, Oleksander Tereshenko, says it was a terrible time.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Lots of good performers have to go to work abroad - just to survive because we had problems with salary payments. pouring more resources and support into the field and strong economic growth in the 2000s prompted some artists to return home. \u003cbr/\u003eCircuses opened with new shows and many viewers returned. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite its many obstacles, the Ukrainian circus is still fighting on and giving birth to creative new shows that win it international respect.\u003cbr/\u003eThe circus artists are passionate folk and keen to keep their industry alive.\u003cbr/\u003eDozens of privately run and commercially successful circus companies have sprung up in recent years and their artists have won
