Society is comprised of two groups of the population, the 15 percent who are politically active, and all the rest who are in a morass, to use a figure of speech. Various of protesters\u003cbr/\u003eAround 500 people came out on a rainy afternoon in Moscow on Sunday to protest against the beatings of journalists and activists, linked to a dispute over a forest just outside the Russian capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe protesters held photographs of reporter Oleg Kashin and environmental activist Konstantin Fetisov, who were both savagely beaten this month, as well as  journalist Mikhail Beketov, who was left handicapped by a 2008 beating.\u003cbr/\u003eFetisov is among those trying to save the Khimki forest from being cleared for highway construction. \u003cbr/\u003eKashin reported on the controversy.\u003cbr/\u003eBeketov, a reporter for the Khimkinskaya Pravda newspaper, irked authorities with his articles about corruption involving the Khimki forest.\u003cbr/\u003eBeketov now uses a wheelchair and is unable to speak after a vicious beating by two unidentified assailants near his home left him unconscious in the snow and forced doctors to amputate his leg.\u003cbr/\u003eYevgeniya Chirikova, who heads up the Khimki campaign, told the crowd on Sunday: \"With our action today we want to say: hands off civil activists, hands off journalists, hands off the people who honestly express their views.\"\u003cbr/\u003eRussia's president has called for Kashin's attackers to be
