government during the 1990s.\u003cbr/\u003eMenem was ordered to be held by a federal judge who is investigating accusations that the former president headed an \"illicit organisation\" that supplied arms to Croatia and Ecuador in 1991 and 1995, despite international arms embargoes on both nations. \u003cbr/\u003eThe flamboyant former president, who resurrected Argentina's economy a decade ago, has denied any wrongdoing.\u003cbr/\u003eMenem arrived at court with his new wife, former Chilean beauty queen Cecilia Bolocco, and was mobbed by a throng of reporters.\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of his supporters also crowded outside the federal courthouse.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the hearing he boarded an air force helicopter with his wife and was taken to his country home north of Buenos Aires.\u003cbr/\u003eIf charged and convicted, Menem could be sentenced to between three and ten years of house arrest. \u003cbr/\u003eUnder Argentine law, Menem would escape going to jail because he is 70 years old.\u003cbr/\u003eMenem has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, saying the sales were done \"absolutely legally\" and claiming he is the victim of \"political persecution.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHis detention follows the arrest of his three former advisors, all of whom have been called in recent weeks to give evidence in the arms case before Federal Judge Jorge
