Close of armed guards\u003cbr/\u003eA group linked to al-Qaida tried to assassinate the Somali prime minister in a suicide bomb attack in front of the premier's house that killed and\u003cbr/\u003einjured an unknown number of people, the deputy defence minister said.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is at least the third attempt on Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi's life since he returned to Somalia in May 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eThe prime minister was alive and in a safe place, Somali Deputy Defence Minister Salad Ali Jelle said after the attack. \u003cbr/\u003ePaddy Ankunda, spokesman of the African Union peacekeeping force in Mogadishu, said that a number of people were killed and others wounded. He confirmed that the prime minister escaped unharmed.\u003cbr/\u003eA civilian could be seen lying on the ground at the blast site, badly injured.\u003cbr/\u003eAn Associated Press reporter saw five bodies lying on the street outside the prime minister's house.\u003cbr/\u003eNearby houses and buildings were also badly damaged.\u003cbr/\u003eThe scene was heavily guarded by soldiers and peacekeeping troops who arrived just minutes after the explosion took place, Ankunda said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack took place two days after Somali security force operations coupled with shelling from a US warship, led to the defeat of a group of Islamic militants in a remote, mountainous northeastern area of Somalia.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least 8 foreign fighters were reported killed in that incident.\u003cbr/\u003eThe last attempt on Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi's life was on May 17th, when a bomb exploded as Gedi's convoy was on its way to the capital's airport. \u003cbr/\u003eNo one
